Please post a picture of the room?

Here is a picture of the windows. The new grey couch hasn’t come yet. I’m also getting rid of the tables and lamps and getting all new furniture. So basically I have an empty room that I need to decorate.

Also the floor is a cognac red oak.

Either off-white or a lighter version of the rug's blue would work with Accessible Beige walls and a gray sofa.

Maybe a darker gray in a fabric that would add some texture?

Thank you for your help. What style would look nice with that window. I know it’s a dark picture and the couch hasn’t been delivered yet and the rug gets delivered tomorrow. Here is a sample fabric of the couch and 2 chairs, the wood floor and also the paint sample. Will the rug look ok or do I need to pick out a different rug? Any thoughts?

I would just use plain white panels, enough panels that they look full when closed. I am no crazy about mixing patterns. I would not use the gray/white pattern for the chairs.

Can you recommend an area rug that would go with the chair print? Here is the chair
  • 8 years ago

I have a bold accent pattern and went we much softer/muted color and pattern in the rug but still the same color palette.

I’m not able to return the chairs. I like them but do understand the area rug might not go with the chairs. I can easily return an area rug. We recently moved in and are purchasing furniture that works with the space and now need to start picking out the rest. I’m also purchasing all new tables and lamps. I can post a picture of the couch also. I would say the blues are probably my favorite colors. Same couch different angles.

Thank you all for your suggestions!!! It is helping me. Please keep them coming.

I think you need an area rug with a very subtle pattern. If you like blue, I wonder what anybody thinks about this rug.

The rug and chair together probably would not work for me. But since the rug is returnable,at the very least it will help you know if that is the colourway you want in a replacement. Curtain-wise, I would not decide until the rug is in. Are the blinds staying?

Oaktonmom - I do like that area rug very much. I wonder if I could find something a little cheaper but super similar.

Hollybar- yes I was thinking of possibly keeping the blinds.

Even though it’s a safe choice, I’d go with a more solid rug and add prints in your accents (pillows, art). Maybe somethIng like this?

Oaktonmom- I’m going to pottery barn to check out the rug. I do like it a lot.

I also need to pick out an area rug for foyer. The living room is off of foyer and the blue rug would be seen from the front door and foyer space. Any suggestions?

I found this rug. How do you think it will look with the chairs?

In thinking about it further, I have to agree with Katie. If you are going with a patterned rug, it should probably be the same color palette as the chairs. If you want to introduce navy into the room, I'd go with a solid rug and patterns elsewhere. Wish someone would photoshop your chairs on some of the rugs.

    How about this rug?

Once you figure out what rug you're going with, you might consider using an off-white curtain with a blue ribbon edge. It keeps the light in the room, but adds an echo of the color and brings depth to the room.

I think that last rug won’t add anything to the room. What about this one. It has gray and navy and beige and maybe the pattern is small enough that it won’t compete with the chairs. If you can’t find a rug you like, perhaps sell the chairs on CL and purchase new ones.

This is one that caught my eye also. Would this work with the couch and chairs? The chairs wouldn’t be under the rug but still in the same room in a different conversation area. The rug would be in front of the couch. The chairs would still be close to the rug. Please give me feedback. I so appreciate it! Thanks to everyone that has responded to me. It has been helpful.

    Here’s the blue rug.

Jean,I like the last rug you posted best. But,no way would I pay anywhere near that for a printed rug. Especially not now when far better quality rugs at lower prices abound. What size do you need?

I do agree it is expensive. I would need 5x7
  • 8 years ago
    Oops I meant 5x8 size

I also think the last rug is too crazy expensive. I think the last one I posted might work well. It incorporates all of the colors. If you even remotely like it, maybe you could order the smallest size and see what you think. Shipping and returns are free, so nothing lost.

Honestly,I've spent a lot on rugs over the years. Most of them are still with me in one way or another. My objection to that PB rug is the quality for the price. Of course, another problem is that it is hard to buy a rug on-line even with free return. But oaktonmom is right & nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Ok sounds good everyone. Yes it is expensive. I rather not pay that much. I guess I’m trying to get a few options and then pick the one I like best. I think I will order the navy/grey/beige and see how that looks. I do like color but nothing crazy. I thought Maybe the last blue one would bring nice color in the room. As the neutral one didn’t do much but it seemed safe. The neutral gray one is from pottery barn also. I like the grey chairs a lot. They are bossy and seem to want all the attention in the room. I have liked all the suggestions so far. The only thing I’m concerned with the navy/grey/beige is its going to look too distressed and I’m not quite sure I will like that. But colors are great! I do think the last blue rug the expensive one is a beautiful color. I heard pottery barn is having a sale on Memorial Day weekend which would help.

Yes, the esale rug is going to look distressed so I don’t think you’ll be happy with it if that’s not a look that appeals to you. Keep looking unless you purchase the Pottery Barn rug and like it.

Stopped at pottery barn and didn’t care for the blue rug with the chairs. I did come across this one while I was there. What do you think? I seem to like it better than the other neutral one I found. And this one is priced a little better.

What’s the name of the rug so I can see it on line.

    Hi oaktonmom

here is the rug. Kenley in gray from pottery barn
  • 8 years ago

Jean, if you really like the rug, I think it would work. I feel bad that you are settling on a rug with little color when you started out wanting color in the rug. I don’t know anything about the quality of the rug below, but it has the gray and a hint of blue even though it looks purple on line. If the colors work, at least you’d be introducing a little blue.

    Oaktonmom,
Thank you for another rug suggestion. I might just order that one too and see how it looks. Yes I did want color but it seemed like the blues are fighting the chairs too much and a softer more neutral seems to be the way to go.

I did purchase another rug in blue from pottery barn Bryson in midnight for the foyer. I do have the blue there. And since I really won’t be having blue in the living room I’m going to do it in the family room! The bosworth blue medallion rug from pottery barn that you suggested is actually a front runner for a rug. Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. Next is the window treatment and I also need to find tables, lamps and some art work.

I am just now reading all this and wanted to say I think the sofa is lovely - a great gray. I hope others comment because there are usually more posters who are really adept at these suggestions. It;s great that you will be able to "sample" some of the rugs in your home in your lighting etc. It's so hard sometimes to judge in different settings.

Jean, Can’t wait to see what rug you select! It’s a big investment. Don’t be in a hurry.
