Are you aware that Boston ivy can change the way it clings? If the wall is smooth with no cracks in the spaces between the bricks, the ivy hangs on by making suckers on the ends of its roots. If the wall has any indentations between the bricks, then the ivy grows needle like tentacles. These can in time, if the mortar gets old, grow right into the mortar and weaken the bricks. People have had to remove their ivy because it was causing the bricks to fall out due to the weather and water getting into the cracks it made. Of course I am talking about years of growing.

No, I did not realize that. All I have seen so far are the suckers fortunately.

Everything I've read says English Ivy is not OK for bricks/mortar but Boston Ivy would not hurt it.

I live in an area of very old houses ( mine is 45 years old) so that is probably the reason people don't like anything that might damage the outside of their homes. Homes that were not built to code and have different mortar between the bricks.

Still, this is very good information. Some bricks have little mortar- something to do with helping the house settle without cracks.

I will be careful not to let the ivy go there.
