I suppose it depends on the variety (some pole beans are a little more heat tolerant than others) and on what your temperatures are doing. My pole beans have been in the ground 3 or 4 weeks, and I'm worried they're not going to bloom until the air temperatures are warm enough to cause the blossoms to drop off the plants without setting beans. So, here at my house, it is that oddball time---to late to plant Spring pole beans and to early to plant Fall pole beans and I'm waiting to see if the bean plants that I planted almost on time will make beans. We're already hitting the 90s many days, and most beans start dropping blossoms at temperatures of 85-90. I don't know what your weather has been like, but the OSU-recommended planting dates for pole beans in Spring are April 10-30, so based on that info in combination with the weather being so warm in May, I'd say it is the wrong time now to plant pole beans. Just wait and plant them at the Fall Garden planting dates recommended by OSU, which are July 15-30th, I believe. If you plant them now, it is likely that by the time they start blooming, we'll be so hot the blossoms drop without setting beans. It also is likely they'll become spider mite infested and won't survive until fall. By waiting until the recommended fall dates for pole beans, your plants can avoid most of the weather and spider mite issues. (Our spider mite population usually peaks around early July and then falls slowly.....). The bean plants I have in the ground, whether pole or bush, snap or lima, have a big spider mite problem developing quickly in this heat, and it is likely to end the bean sesason prematurely.
