Newly planted tree dying

I recently planted a Japanese Flowering Kwanza and it appears that the top half has died. It has new growth on the bottom that has grown atleast half as tall as the tree is. What do I need to do to make sure I can at least save the tree.

    If your 'Kanzan' Japanese flowering tree cherry was a high graft, with the 'Kanzan' part perched on top of a long section of sweet cherry (Prunus avium) trunk - which is often the case - then it sounds like you may have lost the 'Kanzan' scion entirely and the sweet cherry stock has sent up shoots of its own. If this is determined to be what happened then the whole specimen should be removed and replaced, as the stock is not going to produce the flowers and growth you originally wanted. And sweet cherry, despite the frequent planting of it for orchard or home fruit production is actually quite a weed in suitable climate areas. Such as mine.

    And has other issues such as pest and disease susceptibility, nuisance surface rooting, and spreading underground to form groves.
