The corm (not a bulb) must reach a certain size before it will bloom ... generally about the size of a grapefruit. Blooming can take a lot out of the corm and so may not bloom yearly. Ditto if it had a bad growing season.

Each corm only puts out a single leaf. That spotted stem is the leaf petiole. The leaf itself is comprised of a number of leaflets (subsections of the leaf). Looks like a little tree. In strong sunlight, the leaf will be shorter but far sturdier than if grown in shade.

I've grown them over the summer and brought the corms in for the winter and kept them bone dry during that time. (I live in an apt and keeping it in a pot on my balcony through our winters would be a death sentence.) Summer they'd get lots of sun and water in very organic soil. Think mine are goners this year. For some reason, the dumb things didn't break dormancy until late August last summer (which gave them almost no growth time before cold set in). No idea why so late. Had grown them for about 10 yrs and hadn't done anything differently. Dug the corms up last fall and they were much smaller than usual. Planted them again this spring hoping they'd get growing and fatten up. Still no sign of them. Disappointing and aggravating. Was gifted these but if they croak, don't see that I'll find any soon that fit my finances.
