Pick a spot, or pick a hosta?

I was at the garden store this week picking up perennials for pots, and of course I had to peruse the hosta section. So many beautiful choices - but I decided I should wait until my existing plants come up, so I know where I need to fill in space (I'm in North Dakota, and my hostas are just coming up).

But it made me wonder about all you hosta pros - do you fall in love with a hosta and find a place for it, or do you find a spot in the garden, and look for a hosta to fill it?

well ... if you dont have 50 to 100 pots to plant in fall ... you really arent a collector ... [this isnt a rule limited to just hosta ...]

and having a spot to put them be damned .. lol ... its a reason to get rid of the ugly old ones.. the underperformers.. useless grass.. and any species that doesnt begin with the word HOSTA .....etc ...

Well, there's always room somewhere for a smaller one or six. But one must plan carefully when purchasing one of the big boys like Victory or Empress Wu: the purchased plant is going to look a bit lonely if you plant it based on its ultimate size, or you have to recognize that somebody is going to have to move two years after you plant it.

Most of the hostas in my yard are transplants from my Mom's house - I moved dozens before my Mom sold her house. I am gradually establishing a large part of my yard (I call it "the Forest", even though I'm in the middle of town) into a shade garden, but I haven't purchased much yet.

I have so enjoyed reading here, and seeing all the fabulous photos of people's hostas and other shade-lovers! Since most of my plants are identified as "CFMH" (Came From Mom's House), I am just starting to label the ones I know.
