Thank all you guys for the recent attention! Just yesterday we began removing the white picket fence (our property is very rural and fenced otherwise...) The concept right now for the space behind the fence is to be cleared more, stumps ground down, and fully sodded...all the way up to the concrete surrounding the pool. As far as the design is concerned I like the idea of duel shade umbrellas at different spots, chase lounges, and strung up lantern lights. I really like the shade structure from the above reply and also like similar structures, but my biggest challenge is that the patio had that curving concrete design verses a clean square design...squares and curves aren't compatable right?

You can have a structure designed anyway you like! You don’t have to stick to a modular design. They are permanent so you need to decide if it’s something you want covered all year round. I love the modernness of sail shades too, Arizona’s sun is just too harsh. Needed something that wasn’t going to get destroyed by monsoons and heat. Our pergola is the best feature next to our pool.

Because you have such a large patio you may want to look at “outdoor restaurant patio” images on google. They have the same issue of providing shade but not being necessarily permanent. Some elements you may see there could offer inspiration?
