Casement Window A/C Unit Problem

We need to put one a/c unit in our daughter's bedroom. Our 87-year-old casement windows are about 46" high. All of the casement window A/C units that we've looked at have a max height of 40". The units fit the width of the window. Does anyone have any suggestions? My husband has thought about making the window "smaller" with a piece of plywood - the aesthetics of that make make me shudder. (Plus, he's really not that handy.) We've thought about portable a/c units, but it seems like they need to be vented out of a regular double hung window. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
