stephanie..thanks..it is dramatic..I think that's the right ID..have a vague memory of buying and planting "Tokudama"..not sure if the tag said more than that..

garyz..when I looked on the hosta library Aureonebulosa was the best fit..I've never bought a Great Expectations having heard they were difficult..but tags can be wrong..

My guess would also be GE.

don_in_colorado..GE didn't occur to me since according to my tags I don't have it..it HAS been a slow grower..isn't that what's happened to a lot of people growing a GE? (then it eventually disappears)..it is planted near a beech tree - probably not great..I'll look for some posts about GE..

pic#1 is mine..pics 2,3 & 4 are screenshots from GE posts..my leaves were bigger than most of the pics (some had items for scale)..most were more yellow but my yard IS shady..there was a comment that GE has 3 colors and mine does..so maybe I have a GE?..

My Tokudama is just starting to unfurl but leaves have this glaucous blue tint which is unmistakable and gives muted effect to green/yellow area. I suppose it will melt in a lot of sun...

if you grew them side by side.. there would be no question which was which ... and i think linda nailed it ... its the cloudiness of wax .... that makes the colors muted ...

besides.. GE goes to white/parchment center in later summer ... TAN stays yellow ...

i never grew a successful GE ... and apparently never took a pic of my TAN .... go figure ...

lindalana..bear with me..not a Tokudama?..is mine muted?..it's in the shade so my green/yellow area will be green..in the screenshots #4 has colors like mine while the other is more grass green and more yellow..

ken..I already see a narrow line of white/parchment in the center of my leaves..so are you thinking GE?..my eyes aren't as well trained as some of you who see very subtle differences..I can pick up on it when someone points it out lol..

garyz..no I don't have any of those..I have my tags but didn't label my hostas..I know what I own just not all the locations..your GE is pretty..more leaves and better color than mine..I never bought a GE or DQ because I've read negative comments but they do well for some (like you)..

I took this picture of my GE today. The whole sleep, creep, leap thing wasn't explained to GE apparently. Planted in 2015 and it still only had two eyes this year. The two eyes do make a lot of leaves, but come on!

The margins on your mystery hosta appear much bluer to me. But I'm no expert.

I agree..my hosta IS quite blue..it blends into the blue one behind it..I'd like to see my Tokudama tag..I thought I planted it in that spot..

Yeah, Nicholsworth, I can't grow Great Expectations. I think it's gorgeous, so I've tried at least four times, but they've all died.

don..I'm afraid of Great Expectations!..I've read lots of comments like yours..my neighbor (who has hosted hosta garden tours) had a GE that died..she even divided it and tried it in several locations..they all died..I never bought one labeled GE..it's funny that I have a hosta that people think could be GE..and it's alive!..

Here's my thoughts: In the spring GE will have a yellowish green center if not grown in enough sun. Your screen shots #2 & #3 show an example of this. If grown in at least a couple hours of sun, the center will be a beautiful shade of yellow. The center turns to white much later.

Your NOID has the resemblance of GE in my opinion. I would watch for color change this year and take a picture of it when it flowers. I know that GE doesn't like to be moved, but I would consider moving a large rootball of this plant to a sunnier location in the late summer or early spring. That way, next year, you could really see what the coloration is.

Years ago I moved my GE to a sunnier location. What a transformation! It's one of the hostas I most look forward to seeing every year.

there's more tags here than at first glance..I have several envelopes with hosta tags so I looked there first..didn't find Tokudama..maybe there was a sticker on the pot and no tag..I know that I bought one..I liked the name..I did see tags that I didn't remember that well..who's heard of Herifu?..I have one somewhere..

newhostalady..this year the leaves seemed so big..so much that I noticed it when I walked by..I decided to ask for an ID but I thought I had a Tokudama..I think it was more yellow when I bought it..finding a sunnier spot is a challenge here..well whatever it is it's a nice addition to my garden..

I saw your other thread and all the wonderful pictures of your property. I can see that "finding a sunnier spot" is challenging. But if it is GE, and if it made you notice it this year, you would be so surprised and overjoyed at how it looked in a bit more sun. And then you would be like me, waiting for it to grow and wow me again in the spring.

As for the tags picture, I keep the tags too! They look like mine!

newhostalady..thanks for the compliment!..I love living in shade but it stops some plants from reaching their peak..I don't know what I would do without hostas..the neighborhood is FULL of them..it would be sad without the hostas..I have some old photo albums..binders with plastic pages with pockets..it's intended to hold 2 pics back to back..I bought some pretty albums to use for the pics then I could use the old ones for my plant tags..could see both sides of the tag..another job that I haven't finished..

I live with a lot of shade too, and I find it takes a long time to grow most plants. Good idea to use old albums to put plant tags in!
