I'm Curtain Challenged

I’m putting drapes in my living room. Walls are beige w/ white trim, sofa is navy, the other sofa is beige and the rug is gray/white. Yesterday, I purchased PB's Seaton Textured drapes in Neutral with a white sheer to go in the middle of each window. Only to find out it was back-ordered until August.

Question 1: I could wait it out OR I could buy the same drape in gray. I know the gray will match the rug, pillows, but will it clash w/ my walls? Any suggestions on which color would be better?

Question 2: The top of my window sill to the floor is 90 inches. There are 4 inches from the window sill to the ceiling, so I was going to place the rod right in the middle, 2 inches below the ceiling. I’m using the pocket system, not rings. That means my 96-inch curtains will brush the floor w/ 3+ inches of material, is that too much? Do I need to have them hemmed?

And an FYI: I also bought a console table for behind the sofa & will bring the front legs of the sofa onto the rug when it arrives. Also, I dislike the pics that are up, they're there until i find something I love.

Did you find a picture of your plan so you have a visual of what you can expect the out come to look like? My concern is that your room and windows are smaller in scale, the one window is very close to the shelving and overall, your plan has too much fabric for the space, especially if you’re going to place art between the windows too.

You have all that pretty trim around the windows, giving the room character, it would be a shame to cover any of it. There are so many options available that would be a better fit over all and can show it off.

Leave the windows as is, there is not enough space around them to properly hang those panels

These are all concerns I've had (small space, covering the woodwork) - which is why i've done nothing.

What if I skipped curtains and just hung sheers... would that be any better? I could also ditch the pictures. The problem is - the formerly 1-story house directly across the street, just went to 4-stories and now i feel like we are on display for their entire family. We live in a quiet part of the city - but we get a lot of foot traffic too. I priced new blinds (which were nearly $800) -- but maybe that's the way to go.

I feel like your underlying goal it to soften the room's look. I agree with the others that curtains are not the route to go here. I would add in some indoor plants to the space and add different layers of textures. Right now every material (pillows, ottoman, couch, rug) all have a very similar texture. Mix it up + plants and you've got a cozy, inviting room.

Altho there's not a ton of wall space to the left of the left window, I think you have plenty of room to hang panels if you want. The window sill is the bottom ledge. The top is just called molding. Since you only have 4" at the top, I'd mount the rod as high up as you can go. If they're 96", yes they'll have to be hemmed. You want them to just touch the floor if possible. If they end up being only an inch too long, I think you're OK with that. I'd wait for the neutral color. Don't think the gray will work.

I don't think I'd put a sheer under, unless that's your only option. The sheer offers privacy during the day but will do nothing at night. A bit dated also. Maybe a roller shade if you need it for privacy.

Keep your shutters and use a relaxed roman blind at the top when you need privacy.

Thanks everyone for your input -- much appreciated!!! I guess I'll cancel that curtain order & reconsider other options re: shades/etc. it's not easy to find something that lets light in & offers privacy.

I get exactly what you’re talking about, no one wants to be on display in their own home, that’s a creepy feeling. If you don’t like the shutters (which it seems like you don’t, you could put full roman shades in. They would offer a lot of fabric choices and there’s a couple of different styles to choose from but see how the samples below all offer a more open and airy feel?
