Can you a pic? Here is my Liberty and the margins are quite yellow.

Like Barb's also - even in pip form the bright yellow edge is visible. Unless this hosta in NOT a Liberty, I've never seen one emerge with anything but the yellow margin.

Angt29, what kind of light does your Liberty get? I have one that gets morning sun, and three that are planted in a shadier spot. No one ever believes they are the same plant.

The one in the sun is gorgeous, with bright yellow margins. The three in the shade, have more of a washed out yellowish green margin. They are really kind of ugly, and they stay ugly all summer. The edges get lighter, but they never get that creamy white.

I'm really surprised by the difference, and plan on moving all three. I'm in the twin cities too.

Thank you all for your input. Our whole yard is quite shady. It might get very little morning sun, dappled sun during the day, then maybe a smidge of afternoon sun. I guess I didn't think the amount of sun would affect the emerging color that much. I know that sun can help sustain lighter color throughout the seasons, and it's vigor, but that is kind of a bummer if it won't even emerge that yellow. Guess I'll have to think about whether or not I want to move it. It sounds and looks similar to your hostas, Jamie and Beth, but here is a picture. Look the same to you? Kind of disappointing! But here is a Snake Eyes that I got last year that is not disappointing me, and two other beauties who are showing off in mostly shade, shooting star and trillium. Gotta include something pretty with this dud. :)

Yep! Who knew? That's exactly what my three look like. You just have to find a spot with a little bit more sun.

My Liberty started out with narrow margins and did not even look like it would turn out to be Liberty. But as it matured it developed wider yellow margins. They might be wider if they got more sun but still nice, I think.

Well, I guess the sun is the issue. Linnea and Sandyslopes, you both have gorgeous plants. It makes me feel hopeful, at least. :) I have an Olive Bailey Landgon in a sunnier spot that I've been thinking of moving. I think I'll move that and put the Liberty in its spot. Hopefully it starts to look like it should! Thank you for all the input, and confirming that some of you do indeed also have 'under-sunned' plants looking the same. I appreciate it!

Angie, brilliant move exchanging OBL with Liberty! :D. OBL won't even notice the difference but Liberty will - in a positive way. I remember waiting a couple of years for mine to look like it should....I've raised its "favourite" status in my garden. I don't own one but someone (zKathy?) has a gorgeous, pretty mature Arc de Triumphe (sp?) the growing habit of Liberty reminds me of it.

Linnea, it seems to be so judging by the difference over the last year here. I'm sitting outside and can't keep my eyes off Liberty - standing there so upright and the leaves are huge and so perfect and draping just-so...the yellow margin is astounding. This hosta is definitely worth the wait !

I actually bought the OBL a few years ago because I liked the darker variation. Since it gets a little more sun, I think it lightens it a bit, and would probably keep better color in the shade. If I ever just got something right the first time, I wouldn't have to move things so much and they'd probably be much bigger. :) I always see things in other people's yards that I really like, but for whatever reason they don't usually work out that way in mine! :[) Hopefully my Liberty will look like yours soon. I love yours with that Japanese Maple (I think??).

Yes, it is a Japanese Maple, Angie specifically purchased to provide dappled sunlight for the whole day and knowing the impact it will have on Liberty and vice versa. ;-). Boy, what you just said is the voice in my head also...”if I ever just got something right the first time...” then I tell the other person in my head “well, then you’d have nothing to do!” Lol

Claudia, whatever it is, it is a pretty hosta. I do think dappled sun is better than solid shade. Most of my hostas get dappled sun all day, but this particular spot I had the Liberty in was probably one of the few spots in our yard that is pure shade because of the location to the house. Josephine, that Liberty looks gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.

I did move my Liberty to a location that gets some direct morning sun, and then good dappled sun throughout the day. I'm hopeful that some day mine will look more like your Liberties! Otherwise it's getting permanently moved to a location I don't see. :)
