Compare with Euonymus. I don’t know how to tell apart the native one from the invasive Euonymus alatus.

Thanks for your help. Along with euonymus, we had suggestions including honeysuckle, chinaberry, and pig nut hickory, but I believe you found it.

There's no doubt at all it's a Euonymus and not any of those other suggestions. I don't see the tell tale wings on the stems which mark E alatus. But we can't see older stems.

Seems like the wings are present from the start. At any rate there's also a var. apterus that doesn't have them. I don't know its prevalence in the wilds of eastern North America - if that's where the photo in the O.P. was taken.
