Why does the table seat only six people? I would think that a 54" table would seat 7-8. Does the base have such a large diameter that it gets in the way of chairs?

Thank you for your interest! That is a great question, as you are correct, an 80" width with the leaf in use would normally seat more than 6 people. I have asked the manufacturer to explain their reasoning and will get back to you soon. Happy Houzzing!

This is the explanation from the manufacturer:

"The leaf extends the table from round to oval which only adds 22” in length. 8 seats might work but would be a tight fit."
