I agree with the metal spindles with wooden handrail idea from palimpsest - for the fireplace, I would leave it plain - take the wall art down, and remove the decor items.

Since everyone so nice to help, would you stay with same color wood as crown molding and doors or add some white from kitchen cabinetry?

You could paint the ballusters white and keep the oak banister. I wouldn't spend the $$$ to replace it with an iron railing etc. You'll never get the money back if you ever sell.

I'm guessing you could tear it out and replace it with one through the wall. Hard to tell without better images of the room.

I would leave as is. Wood matches fireplace surround, etc. Nice art over stairs.

Appreciate all of your comments more than you know - I know what I like when I see it, but I can't visualize it. If I would go wood newel post/railing and metal balusters - 1. would you do black (fireplace)or oil rub bronze (rest of metal in house)? 2. It is 10 ft long - would you just have newel post at end or would you break up spindles with a 2nd newell post in the middle? Thanks in advance for your help! This is our forever home and trying to make it "feel right."

This is not do it yourself. Stairs need to be to code. For 10 feet I think you will need a Newell post in the middle.
