Adeniums in Non Organic Soils

Do Adeniums have less risk of root rot in a non-organic soil? I planted my first one in the gritty mix, and a single careless watering in the middle of winter killed the plant with root rot. Seeing how tender these plants are and how little they tolerate water in cold conditions, I am wondering if it makes sense to plant them in a totally inorganic medium like pumice and simply fertilize frequently.

For those who have raised Adeniums in soils with no organic content, does this give them any additional protection from root rot?
