LeexNova or Super Nova Mandarin

I am curious about this variety of mandarin. Does it have any spikes/thorns? What does it taste like? I read it's super sweet.

I think I have read all the info on the internet. I am just wondering if any member here has one and would like any first hand information about its growth characteristics.

I got an entry version from Four Winds this last November. During the winter, it lost all of its leaves and the branches died back. I cut off all of the dead branches and the trunk down to a few inches above the graft union. It put out some leaves but has not grown otherwise in the last few months.

I’m interested in them as well. I’ve been waiting for it to come back in stock for months. Vladimir, I’m sorry to hear about your tree. I’m starting to wonder if FW trees are just not that hardy any more. I’ve had trouble with mine two and I think Denise has too.

Yes, I have been having some problems with FW trees. I think it has something to do with the rootstock they are using. My Gold Nugget is not growing well at all and I have had it for over a year.

It would be nice if all forum members have their state and zone available so that members know more about growing habits. For instance, if you live in California you have better excess to the best fruit tree's available. Supernova might not be available to me and others from other states, boo boo.

Vladimir same thing happen to mine too! It's also 4 winds I have some new growth above the graft but it's getting burnt. I may dig it up and put it in a pot under shade until it's bigger. Or wait to my local OSH gets more. They have a lifetime plant guarantee.

Whole foods had super novas back in January. It was good.

Same thing happened to my Lemonade tree from FW.

Those of you who are having problems with their FW trees, have you contacted them and expressed your concerns? I don't normally have problems with their trees, but I may call about it and see what they have to say because something has changed between different varieties.

If I had to guess, I’d venture to say that FWG may be grafting varieties to C-35 that aren’t fully compatible with it or where compatibility isn’t proven commercially. Aren’t lemons, for example, often incompatible with trifoliate and its hybrids?

As a personal example, I ordered a Smith Red and a Sudachi from them this year. The Smith looks really great, arrived a week ago a lush green, and is about to flush. The Sudachi arrived a pale yellow-green in early April and still hasn’t flushed. I’m thinking of attempting a Sudachi to Yuzu graft as an insurance policy.

Pac, have you noticed that FWG has very little inventory available. I wonder why. I have never seen them have so many varieties out of stock.

Just today I noticed they put quite a few more varieties up sale. Not GN or lee x nova, though - the ones I’m waiting for.

Does anyone else have thoughts on FW and their rootstock being incompatible? I was going to buy a lemon or two from them if the other varieties ever come back in stock, but I don’t want to waste my money on an inferior plant.

What varieties are your FW problem trees? Denise is it just your GN? Both of mine are lemons, so that would make sense what Pac said about rootstock incompatibility.

Alanna, yes at this point it is just the GN. Leaves are falling off now.

My LxN from FW is pushing alot of new growth the past few days... It almost doesn't look sad. Should I leave it in the ground or transfer to a pot in the shade?

I have no choice to put mine in a pot. That is a lot of water there. How long has the tree been in that location?

have a New Zealand lemonade on C35 from FWG. It flowers, sets fruit, They grow, it sets more flower, drops the 1/2-3/4 inch fruits and sets new fruits that grow until it flowers again, drops the developed fruit to set all new fruits. 3 years and not a fruit off the tree but over 500-2000 flowers - fruit-lets then drop offs.

I forgot to ask. Does the LeexNova have large spines?

It's been in that location for a year now. It mostly died back. Look like there was one branch growing and staying green. Then it just died as some new growth appeared. I finally cut off the last branch and then it exploded in new growth over the past few days. Is this similar to breaking apical dominance? I may just put up a shade tent to protect it this summer.

The water drains fairly quickly. I did not see any large spines when I got it last year.

junk4us I would put it into a pot because I would be in control of everything; food, water sun and shade. I would hate to see the same thing happen again because they are hard to acquire. I am surprised at the trunk being so thick.

The trunk grew bigger in the past few months. The Tango next door is thickening up nicely. The Kishu on the other side, not as much. I don't recall the trunks getting so thick after a year when I used to have citrus in pots. One of the reasons why I'm a bit hesitant in moving it to a pot. My local OSH had quite a few LxN earlier this year. It was gone when I finally decided that I wanted a replacement. I'm hoping they will get more.

junk4us The pictured tree trunk looks older than a 1 y/o. I guess it is happy if you are seeing new growth. Now it's a wait and see. I hope it continues to flush out new growth.

The tree is probably older than 1 yo. It's the size of the entry level trees if you ordered it from FW. There is no tag with the graft date.

The tango was grafted in 2014.

junk - little OT but that Tango in your pic... has it always had leaves that curled like that? I ask because I have heard some mandarins tend to do that and my FW Tango, which is slowly coming back from the dead, has leaves curled under like that...

I own a Tango and its leaves do not curl as pictured.

I checked my pics. It's been curly for a long time. So was the LxN before the die back and the kishu and the new pixie in the shade. Only the meiwa, GN, and other pixie do not have curly leaves. Oh and owari Satsuma. The Satsuma is purdy.

Thanks Denise & junk! Mine is doing a little growth flush (finally... yay), so will see what those new leaves eventually do when they mature.

Now I am worried about the leaf curl. I thought it was due to heat. The new pixie had a growth flush. It's in a shadier area so I will see if it curls up or not.

junk, my trees are all out in the hot sun. I just went out to examine my tree to describe my leaves. They grow upward at an angle like this picture. https://www.tomorrowsharvest.com/store/tango-mandarin.html

Here’s a picture of my Tango from Logees. It hasn’t been healthy for a while now after being severely pot bound and nearly strangeling itself. The leaves are rather weak, but they’ve never curled under.

Alanna It needs a bigger pot unless it has been up potted within the last 2 months.

It’s in 1 gallon pot now. I had planned to put it in a 2 gallon, but when I barerooted in April, the roots were badly tangled and there was root rot. I was hoping it would regrow some roots over the summer and I can repot in September.

sound like the best thing to do.

    Steve

Thanks for the info on your Tango Alanna! I hope those rootmaker pots will get your tree humming along in no time.

I have Lee x Nova. There are small spines ( spikes ) on the branches.
