I measured the distance around the tree at a height of 4’. 15’10” or 190”.

Thanks for posting. I have friends who own a farm that has been in the family for many generations. They have 5 or 6 silver maples that are more than 125 years old, I believe. The largest I have ever seen. I'll try to find some pics if I can (or take some when next we visit.)

I was recently at my BIL place in northern Illinois. He planted this one 40+ years ago, when he bought the house. Seven trunks altogether and he said it was multi trunk when he planted it. Super rich, deep, black dirt soil. I didn't do any measuring. Crappy phone pic doesn't do it justice.

Edit: Got the low down on the age of the tree. He bought the house in 1972 and planted the tree a year or two, possibly 3 years later. He did it himself so it must have been a fairly small tree to begin with. So the oldest this tree could possibly be is 45 years old but more likely it is 43 as we don't think it was planted the same year that he bought the house.

The stem circumference of a low forking tree like these examples is the narrowest point between the ground and the 4 1/2 ft level. And not a measurement obtained by wrapping a tape around multiple trunks leaning away from one another at 4 1/2 ft.

Historic records include a height of as much as 138 ft and a trunk 31 ft 7 in around (not on the same specimen).

Found one picture I had. Unfortunately, no person or car next to it for scale. Not anywhere near record but still pretty darn big. Oh, and a single trunk.
