hmmmm.... refresh my memory .... how does one differentiate between undulata and univittata???

I sometimes think of it as ‘mediovariagata’...but is that a thing? . I think someone posted great info about the differences not so very long ago...and I thought “What great info!” Sadly my memory is such that I don’t remember! I need it to have a more memorable name!

Clearly I was wrong. Hosta database suggests that undulata is “perhaps the world’s best selling Hosta”. So we did line up to buy it after all! No cute name required!

But the difference between it and univitatta remains unclear to me.

Whatever it is, it caught my eye this morning.

As to its designation as a cultivar, there are many reasons. The main reason is that no Undulata form (notably the green one) has ever been found in true wild state. Secondary to that is that it is effectively seed sterile; nature usually doesn't evolve to such genetic dead ends.

which one has the flower buds you could pop??? ... thats what attracted us kids to them in the first place .. ken

Hahahahaha Ken- that’s what we did as kids too! That brings back happy summertime memories.

We also used to pull off the individual flowers from the clusters of garden phlox and suck out the ‘nectar’ as we called it from the end.

Thanks DTeager. The article at the link you provided is excellent. My undulata is clearly univittata! I will make a note of that so that I don’t forget...if I can just remember where I made the note...sigh.

Ken...I didn’t know about the buds that pop. Where I grew up that was an attribute of bladder campion, a common roadside weed. Great fun!

it was clearly a hosta ... but i like the list of other type plants that do such ...

one way to save hosta names.. is to add the name to the file name of the pic ... on your hard drive ...
