Brick Fireplace

I am looking to update our dated family room. we have already replaced the brass fireplace. I am a very visual person but I am having a hard time visualizing how I want this area updated. I want it much lighter but not exactly stark white either. We are definitely up for ideas. TIA

The color of that fireplace and wood make the room feel dark, but I agree white may be too much. Also, a shame that the brick colors are mismatched. Are you planning on painting it? I really feel as though that would brighten the room and bring it up to date.

@Rachel yes I agree too bad the brick is not the same. I am thinking like a white wash for the dark brick....its weird the red brick is glazed or painted with a clear coat of some sort.

White wash would really lighten it up without being too much. That is quite strange that the red brick has a glaze on it. May be worth it to consult a professional, but in my opinion I would paint that red brick to match whatever you will paint your walls so that it won't take away from how beautiful that fireplace is going to look when you finish white washing.

Oh I actually think that would look great too. Either paint it all to match or if she can remove some of the uglier features. Even in that case I agree that the brick and whole room would benefit from paint to bring it together.

Yes definitely removing the tile and carpet. We are thinking a stained concrete or wood flooring. we are removing the wood paneling for sure. I couldn't find a picture of the full room view. it's now filled with furniture. But I am just sick of how mismatched and dated it is.

I should also mention that this room is an add on. it was added on to the back of the house. The red brick is the exterior look of the home. The ceiling is very short.

I am really liking the idea of removing the mantel AND the arch.

It really would make so much sense to remove those. I think the ceiling being low also makes it important to lighten up that fireplace with paint since you would want to make the room feel more open. Right now the brick does the opposite of that. And i honestly would paint or cover right over that red brick to match everything else.

@Rachel I was definitely thinking the same after the suggestions. The 2 different bricks just really had me stuck....and that ugly paneling...

Definitely a tricky room but it will look great with the changes. Hope you can post update pictures at some point and good luck with everything!

Perhaps cover the wall with a light timber

Good to hear you are ready to make some real changes..I would start with the fireplace, as it is the messiest...good idea to have a real mason do this as they can patch up any damage from the removal of arch and mantle...and fill in the top to the ceiling....they can also recommend the best technique for painting the brick...I think it is too drab to do anything less...after this I would remove all wall covering and Sheetrock all the walls...this is the cheapest ...quickest...sleekest finish....perhaps even covering the red brick as it will never match the big wall.......

The wood idea is cool too but horizontal installations accentuate the low ceilings..and unless you hate the brick will add a lot to the budget.....wanted to post a pic of our stained floors as most people aren’t aware of this color option..the other catch is the concrete needs to be new for the stain to work best...

@ritasj I am most in favor of the stained concrete, as I show my hubby pics he is coming around to it. But he did say we would most likely need to pour like a some fresh concrete. As for the walls that's a great to hear that in the long run would be cheapest.

@Irene I hadn't even thought of the shiplap idea....I kinda really like it!

The stained concrete is the most interesting... unique...most complimented and praised..and lowest maintenance floors I have ever experienced...it does need to have an extra smooth finish and needs some stamped lines to avoid cracking over time...so I would recommend looking for someone with some knowledge of this technique...however after the concrete is poured applying the stain can be done quickly and easily by anyone.....to be followed by a sealer that leaves a shine like wax...that lasts for years!

If you decide to add wood paneling I would recommend a vertical installation...and lighter color wood to avoid the “cave” effect...

@ritasj Thank you for your tips, they have been very helpful!

Oh wow, I think drywall around the rest of the room and painting the brick fireplace would work wonders. I just don't like that brick.
