I have a 17 yr old cc tractor. The problem I’m havi is the engine revs up n down. Could it be the carb needs cleaning?

thanks

Could be carb issues , however on a engine that old valve train is more likely an issue . Try compression test . When plugs are out check the plug condition along with air cleaner . Also prior to inspecting carb ensure fuel and filter are clean . If compression is sound , check valve lash . Engine make and model are required to ensure proper spec,s . Does it start up easily , then run rough ? Worse case scenario worn camshaft or rings however smoke should be evident either black or blue under load .

As far as starting goes it may take a few times. Also it stalls when I engage pto if I don’t warm it up some.

No smoke..... gas is fresh and I replaced the fuel filter this year along w oil change

Check compression / plugs to verify state of engine , minimum of 115 psig . Then valve lash and carb or weak coil / ignition module in that order . I assume it ran well last yr ?

'Hunting' is also a governor problem sometimes.

Yes governor would point to carb related issues , especially if he had been messing around the governor springs or linkages . Op has not replied back to anyone recently yet , may have already solved his mystery lol.

Sorry I been out of town. I haven’t done anything yet. So you think I should clean the carb?

Some of the other suggestions probably over my head. I think I can handle a carb issue

Other than valve lash , all other advice is relatively routine . However with a 17 yr old tractor all or any could be an issue . Start with the carb , if you don,t have a compression guage. I previously advised of proper sequence for a quick remedy . How old is the spark plug ? Air filter ? Fuel filter ? all must be good or this will cause an erratic idle , common sense applies Bud !

I do spark plug, fuel filter n check air filter every year. Oil change also.....I’m pretty good w routine maintenance.

hit the Carb with carb cleaner , remove inlet needle valve under the float and main jet and emulsion tube . Still have a hunch it maybe valve train related .
