Interior Design help!

This is my movie room/tv room. We have found a comfortable sofa to buy but the sofa has many configurations. I need help deciding which configuration would work best with my room.

More information-
*The sofa we have now is 84 inches wide. The ottoman is placed on the right to shown where we would prefer to have the chaise portion of the sofa.
*On the floor is blue tape showing 109 inches wide sofa including the chaise portion. This is the sofa size that we think will work best with the room.
What do you think? Should we get a wider sofa?!

As seen in the pictures, it’s a long room with a fireplace on one side and the steps leading to the entryway on the other side.
We have a big TV directly across from the sofa (tv not shown in pictures)

Yes that size looks like it will work, however do you have end tables and a coffee table? It looks like your room isn't finished being decorated.

By the way, the rug is an 8X10 and I plan to get a different rug that is also bigger.

Hi Bandd design. Thanks for commenting. Yes, you are right, the room is unfinished. I need to get a new rug, coffee table and end tables, sofa and possibly accent chairs.
I’m just curious if there is wasted space on wall that is to the right of the sofa. Thinking maybe an accent chair there would be appropriate.

Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like the sofa is a bit far from the tv? Will it be comfortable to watch from that distance?

My biggest issue is that the window is behind you, which makes watching tv difficult with glare, right? Is there a better configuration you might try with the couch, chairs and side tables?

Where is the T.V I do not find sectionals or sofas with a chaise a good choice for seating. Please post pics of the whole space and a floor plan to scale showing where the T.V is

Saypoint- the TV screen is very big so it is comfortable.

Cmbmesa- the TV location is not a problem because we mostly watch television at night.

Patricia- here is a picture of the TV wall
We are basically trying to create a movie room because we only use this room at night.

The room is 24.5 ft by 14.5 ft.

I feel like you need two sofas, one where that one is and one in an L with it. Then, some chairs to balance at the other end. I do agree with the above poster, though, that another room might be better for movie room... The space does have cool architecture. Looks like a great house.

That should read “if your house is big enough”

I like your interesting architecture of your home but I am also confused as to the location of this as a movie room.

Beautiful room! 109" looks pretty appropriately sized to me. I think you could go just a little wider, but not too much more or it will be crowded. This looks like it gives you a little room for side tables. Not sure if you need / want them, but I usually like to have tables on hand for beverages or snacks while watching movies.

Also I'm not certain why it matters if the OP wants to have a movie room directly off of the entry. Since we can't all build ourselves a custom home, sometimes we have to make rooms work for how we live. Better to have a movie room than an empty room that never gets used.

This chart might help you decide where to locate the seating. If you purchase a reversible chaise sofa, you can change the configuration when you want to by flipping the chaise from right to left. When considering size, remember to think about the rug. It should be at lease 2 feet wider than the sofa and slip entirely under the chaise and under the front 1/3 of the sofa seats. Would your family benefit from individual chairs rather than one sofa?

The sofa looks too small and also overstuffed and clumsy. Something with more sleek and modern lines would look better, and perhaps not in the deadly boring brown that everyone has and which does nothing for any room. I agree you do need a larger rug but nothing will really look large enough to balance out that ginormous screen. Since you'll use the room at night that might not really matter but if everyone passes by this room it's a shame that it can't be used for a different, more decorative purpose. Still, it is your home and you have to arrange it in whatever way makes you happy.

Love this room. if you are only watching at night ...and if you only need tv viewing for two or three could you put couch opposite fireplace, then invest in two comfortable but streamlined chairs where exsisting couch is?

The question was.... do I need a wider couch or a different configuration.
I’m happy with the location of tv screen.
On a side note; I’m not trying to create a showroom. I’ve had that in a previous home and I’ve learned that it’s not that important to me.

kelleg69, pricklypearcactus, decoenthusiaste, and Kris Bruesehoff all gave suggestions for the sofa or other configurations. Perhaps you could comment on those suggestions and not worry about the others? No one will know what to add if helpful comments are ignored.

I don't see what's wrong with the taped out size you're considering. It's balanced left to right in the room. Are you wanting to go bigger for more seating or just wondering if you should? There's a difference between could and should: For should, I'd say no. For could I say sure, just leave enough room to get to the back of the room with your dust mop every now and then.

I personally find the chaise creates an unbalanced look if used all alone, and would prefer a straight sectional with two reclining ends. But then I would keep going and would probably place a daybed style sofa, or a couple of ottomans, across from the movie viewing sofa to balance the look in front of the fireplace also, while not blocking view to the screen.

You didn’t mention how many people you want to comfortably seat. If 4 max works for you I say consider 4 oversized swivel chairs in an arrangement like this

It will honor the room and fireplace but still work when you want to watch TV. Small side drink tables and an upholstered ottoman coffee table.

My suggestion was for a different configuration, with no change to where the screen is. And not suggesting you need a showroom but I think the feedback others have given would allow your needs to be met and create a better feel for the room...as well as possibly adding a bit more utilization of the nice exsisting features of the room.

I like thinkdesignlive's ides of 4 chairs. There are some nice sleek(ish) recliners or swivel recliners available now.

Yes, as I suggested yesterday, a 4-chair arrangement, especially with swivel chairs, will function well if you have no more than four people to seat regularly.
