It was such a nice virtual tour, Claudia thank you. I could get lost for hours there... You brought quite the collection home. Are you familiar with Spilt Milk? Milkmaid I haven’t heard of. I’ll have to look it up.

I used to have a Spilt Milk, and also a Pistache, but both died this spring, due to a massive problem with crown rot. So far, I've lost about 10 this year or even more, and I don't know how to stop it. I've decided to throw them away and buy new ones. I'm visiting van den Top's Hostaworld in two weeks to buy more replacements, like Spilt Milk.

The ones you sadly lost - were they planted or potted?

I have never experienced crown rot until I started growing hostas in pots. Lost some this year already too... still waiting on a couple to identify (dislodged name tags) before I have final count :(

All that died were in pots. I have only a few in the ground - they're doing fine but get eaten by slugs.

Josephine, as someone wrote your German is still good and you will have no problems understanding the language when you come here, are you planning a trip to Germany? If so, please come and visit me in Gelsenkirchen, as it is really close to Dortmund. We in Gelsenkirchen certainly have a problem with the Dortmunders due to soccer, but since we kind of beat them twice this season I'm willing to make an exception. Our team is called Schalke 04.

Oh you showed great restrain. Want want want... Most nurseries around do not carry streakers at all.

As for surviving in pots...You are not alone...my best suggestion just plant it in, pot and all, cheek to jowl for the winter. Few people have ability to overwinter well in pots otherwise. Spilt Milk is finicky to begin with imho.

It looks like an amazing place and a fun trip. Not sure how you showed such restraint. I could be there in a couple weeks. Not sure I could stand not being able to bring a bunch back with me.

A wonderful trip and a nice haul! I'm really tempted to get Lemon Snap, beautiful picture of this one. Good that I'm far away from the Netherlands, such trips would make me poor :-)

Wow. I'd probably leave bankrupt!

Since a couple of you wondered how I could show such restraint, here are my tricks to get out there not bankrupt:

Pick the hottest day possible to go there. The greenhouse will be so hot you won't be too enthusiastic.

Take a five-year-old along to help you. He will keep you busy and your mind off the hostas.

Take a husband and child who want to go to the beach.

Forget your wishlist at home - once you get a look at the hostas in the greenhouse you won't be able to remember what was on your list. I didn't forget mine at home but almost left it behind. Mr Fransen came running after me with my list. He is a really nice guy and speaks excellent German.

Last year when he told me he'd discovered an Empress Wu sport with a margin he said he'd named it after a German word starting with Wu and let me guess what it was and I foolishly said "Würzburg?" which is a town in Bavaria but I couldn't seem to think of a more plausible answer. Of course, it was "Wunderbar".
