Where in Southern CA?

Does it really make much difference whether you are in say LA or San Diego?

Between LA and SD, probably not too much, although all coastal areas have microclimates to contend with. But there's a huge difference in weather conditions between more coastal places and inland in southern CA.

As for when you can start tomatoes in the LA/SD area, I would think you can start them now for planting out for a "winter" crop. Isn't that what people in your area often do?

I have no idea! I am a new transplant from the northeast:). But, yes, I've heard about winter crops. I was reading about that yesterday, actually. The article mentioned late July as the latest for a winter crop.

I'll give it a try and see what happens. Will have to outsmart the squirrels (currently very interested in my petunias) and the many, many birds that visit the coast oak grove out back. There are several crows who have taken up residency. I'm sure they'll love to dine on cherry tommies.
