Backsplash Ideas Please

I've designed myself into a bit of a corner. I wasn't planning on remodeling my kitchen--water damage forced the issue. I chose the cabinet color quite randomly--eye went to this color when I entered the paint store and that was that. I was hoping that it would modernize the cabinetry's out-of-date shape, but I'm not sure it did. Then I chose soapstone counters because, well, I've always loved soapstone. I'm happy with both choices individually, but together, the look is quite drab. I'm hoping that the right backsplash and finishings can liven things up a bit, but I am at a loss and am not super confident in the design department. I am wishing I had hired a designer, but too late for that now!

This small kitchen opens to a dining area and living area beyond that. While the kitchen only has the one small window, the rest of the space has multiple sets of french doors and large windows. So there is a good amount of natural light. I've also installed more than sufficient lighting in the kitchen. Walls throughout the open-concept space are white with saltillo tile flooring. Furniture is walnut-color wood, beige fabric and pops of indigo. Furnishings and decor are minimal--going for an open, clean look. Modern but natural--nothing too sleek. We live in the desert, where the style is sort of upscale rural/rustic. I am very sick of the Southwest look. I do, however, like modernized/toned-down Mexican style.

How would you finish my little kitchen? I would like it to look, well . . . happier. :)

en Thank you!
