Very nice selection. I have grown LS Looking Glass for years and really like it. Not as sun tolerant as one might expect. Mine gets sun until approx. 1:30-2:00 and I will move it to a little shadier spot. Very shiny top and bottom of leaves.

No Beverly it retains the shine but the leaves get a little washed out/pale. My soil is moisture retentive so it is definitely a sun exposure issue as we get into the hot summer months. Hanky Panky, LS Dot Com, Teaspoon, Silver Bay, Cracker Crumbs and others are all fine under the same conditions.

Brave attempt is especially attractive.

Does it emerge early? Where I'm putting it is shade from trees so if it comes up early it will fade, otherwise only morning sun for about an hour.

Not any earlier than the others that I listed. It isn't a diva, I would just like it (them) to look good all season. I am going to move the 3 that I have to dappled sun/shade. They will get some morning sun until about 10:00.

Me too. That's why we bought that one. Truth is I first saw it at 2010 convention. It must have been brand new but I didn't think I should spend that much on a hosta. What a shame, it would be huge by now.

Yes, I was enabled by my DH. He selected all but Lakeside Looking Glass.

The buying power of two = more hostas!

I have several small 'Brave Attempt' TC starts that I hope to use in hybridizing.

I kinda wish that I could get a Hosta with reddish stems, even of it isn't "Beet salad" I know that there's another Hosta that has red stems, but, really I do want a Hosta that has really tall stems that may be red, but, I can't remember the name of the Hosta with tall red stems.

There's a few tall red stemmed Hostas around. So far, Stephen King has been the most impressive to me. Since it seems to grow somewhat sparser (for me) it shows off the dark red legs better.

I must say that all of these Hostas aren't much different from each other other than the HOSTA "BEET SALAD" and I do think it is a nice new Hosta, but, I am not sure how to get one.

Well, poaky1, the 4 hosta I bought seem quite a bit different from each other - Beet Salad with its red, Lakeside Looking Glass with its wavy edge and extreme shine, the streaks in Brave Attempt, and the diminutive size of margined Kinbotan.

Hosta Beet Salad seems to be sold out at many on line sources but it looks like Land of the Giants still has it for sale.

Poaky1, here is the link to the Red-Petioled hostas from the Hosta Library under "Lists". This list includes names of hostas that have coloured petioles including red, pink, mauve, speckled... warning, there are many! :-)

I purchased "stephen King" Hosta, I just received it today, it's really tall! It is about 3-4 feet tall! I will need to stake it this year. Lottsa nice red stems. I am wondering how much sun it can take. I have 2 places for it in mind, one has all shade the other is not in direct sun, but is on the north side of my house, kinda open shade. I have other Hostas there also, but, the Stephen King may get too huge for it eventually.

I read recently that you'll lose the red stems quicker in more sun. Mine gets 1-2 hours direct overhead sun, dappled sun before that and completely shaded by the house after.

What a big list Josephines, I think I have a small or medium red stalked (petioled) hosta, but, you can't really see the red on it. I love the Stephen King so far, I have had to stake it, though. Steve, my Stephen King is in all shade under my Pin oak, it MAY get a few rays of sun through the branches, but, really it's under the branches a good bit, so I'm guessing all shade. I have never received a Hosta that big, usually when I get a Hosta I get the smallest bit of the plant. Mostly super tiny, my plant of the Empress Wu was so tiny, I can't imagine that little piece ever being huge. I guess that the Stephen King is maybe not ever small? But, then again, if I'd have placed my order in spring, the division may have been much smaller. ANYWAY, it's a nice division, and it shows just how nice and impressive the SK Hosta is.
