Most people want the 960 or 980. The 960 gives you camera and multiroom mapping/navigation and recharge/resume which is important. The 980 is a minor upgrade over 960 (battery life, etc) of marginal benefit. If you are a member, I'd suggest buying the 960C from Costco (currently about $700) due to the generous return policy and some extra replacement parts bundled in. With costco if you are unhappy for any reason at any time can easily return it. If not amazon, target, whatever....

I really like our Roomba, its not perfect and doesn't completely replace a normal vacuum, but the house is definitely much cleaner than it was when we had to vacuum manually.

We've had our Roomba for about 4 years. It's not one of the fancier ones...pretty sure it's a 650. Agree with DrB...you still need a regular vacuum, but I love the Roomba.

Just wanted to say I bought our Roomba at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It was about $80 off with the coupon.

Depends on your needs. We got a cheap "knockoff" version and it's perfect for our needs. We could buy two, one for each floor, and don't miss the special features. But larger homes do require the mapping etc where a Rhoomba would be warranted. My advice would be to try the cheap one first and return it if it isn't fancy enough.

We were able to test one out before buying. We had our daughter's dog for a week, and she also left her Roomba with us. I just bought the same model.

Be careful with the robot vacuums, if your pet poops and the vacuum finds it, it will spread it everywhere. http://www.scarymommy.com/roomba-meets-pile-of-poop-jesse-newton/

Mike, I saw some of the dog poop videos before buying one. The sales guy at Bed, Bath and Beyond also mentioned it. Ugh...can't even imagine. :-/

    This one's a less disturbing...

I do not know anyone who has a dog that poops in the house so honestly a moot point IMO. Roombas have limitations though, mine doesnot like making the transition from fllor to rug for instance and also cannpt hanf\dle our whole main floor we need 2 I mostly use ours in the lower level where the dogs come in and out from a dog run and we have our media room it works great and docks and recharges itself nicely.

If you have a house pet, odds are that it will poop somewhere in your house at some future time. If your lucky, it won't be while you are away and before your roomba is scheduled to run.

Accidents happen no matter how well your dog is housebroken ... a friend had it happen to her .... I don’t even want to relate the disgusting details. Yuck, I’ll stick with my Dyson.

Good grief...yes...accidents will happen. I actually only use our Roomba for the bare floors, and have yet to run it when I'm not home. I use our upright vacuum for the area rugs, and my little Mighty Mite canister gets used more for dusting and floor areas the Roomba can't get to. As much as I love the Roomba, that Mighty Mite is the most essential IMO.

I have a D80 Neato. Because of my OCD nature, I need for my robotic vacuum to cover every square foot of the space rather than a random bouncing from room to room. There are videos on YouTube that show the random pattern of the Roomba versus mapping pattern of 15 square feet at a time of the Neato. I use mine daily. I don't run it with the scheduling feature. I run it when I am around, so there is no pooping issue. My dogs only go in the house if they are sick. They are more upset than I am. I have collies. Think Lassie dogs. Hair is my life. We call her Alice, as in the Brady Bunch. Neato keeps me sane.

The 960/980 roombas map your floor, the others move randomly. It's an important difference. I've found the scheduling sounds good but in reality you really need to check the floor and pick up odds and ends before running the roomba, thankfully it is mostly toys I'm picking up rather than feces. Also the mapping versions need some light and don't work well at night with the lights off.

Can the Roombas clean hardwood flooring without damaging the floor?

No damage. They are easier on the floor than the regular vacuum.

    Get a Neato They rock.

We have the ecovac deebot thru Amazon. I love that thing. I like to put it in the carpeted bedrooms and shut the door so it cleans under the beds.

@judymn, I agree about it cleaning under the bed, especially a king.

Didn't buy a robot vac after seeing what it did with a puddle and an upchuck....at two different relatives houses. Once a puddle is spread about, pets will keep marking all th e "new" spots. We got a Dyson animal V7 and love it! Don't use any other vac- just this hand held.

Regarding any possible pet "deposits," a quick check around to avoid any problems is a good idea before turning the Roomba loose. Never had a problem in the 4+ years we've had ours. It's very convenient to push that CLEAN button and walk away.

Yeah I don't really get the pet thing. We do the upstairs during the evening when we're home, the downstairs at night when we're asleep. Plus some of the newer models have "deposit detection".

My bare foot has "deposit detection" at no extra charge.

I know this is an older post but my search didn’t unearth a newer one, I love my Roomba iRobot but we have a black area rug and it won’t go on it. Does anyone know how to get it to go on the rug?

If not, This isn’t a huge deal because the majority of our house is hardwood or tile and , being older and with some arthritis, it’s worth the purchase price just to get the areas cleaned under the beds and .other places where I’d have to bend or reach too far.

Also, do,I have to use the app? I like to manually put it in a room, close the door and let it clean the room. For instance , the guest room, which stays clean in between guests, and which I do clean regularly ( dust the bureaus, polish window glass, etc) but I like to freshen up before guests arrive. How do I do this without messing up the app or machine.?

I’m new to the whole iRobot thing.

Laminate a piece of paper, cut in strips and then tape it over the cliff sensors on the bottom, there are about 5-6, I believe, not at home so can't check. It will then go on black rugs. Every once in awhile I have to replace one of them if it gets pulled off.

I just bought the 960, previously had the 761?? but the IR sensor on top got broke off over time from hitting low items, like couch, edge of cabinets. I think the 960 works much better but because of the rollers and no brush, people hair or cat hair, tends to roll up the hair in like a twisted thread and leaves it occassionally on carpet, not an issue on hard floors.
