Having a grey/black island with white for the rest of the kitchen works quite well.

I would recommend matching it with your granite/countertop to tie the kitchen together.

Like this example from our site, they went with a black island/white countertop, and vice versa for the rest of the cabinets/granite.

If you're not planning on having a different countertop, then this kitchen is probably closer to what you're imagining. You can match the base cabinets with the island to make the whole room just flow.

Ultimately it's up to you!

If possible, I'd recommend painting the light to match the island color, whether it's black or grey. Because it will be a focal point, and if nothing else in the kitchen is black, it might not flow as easily with the rest of the kitchen.

How about navy blue for the island? That colors plays better with beige than gray does.

I'll be the third person to suggest a navy blue island on your beige floors. You have a deep teal blue pillows in the breakfast area; spread the color around.

Light is not too big if you want it to be a focal point and it's design suggests you do.

Leave all the cabinets natural except perhaps your island base cabinet -- paint that and your light above it your favorite bright bold color.

Remember that anything that is painted eventually needs to be repainted. Painting all your cabinet could make you begin to hate your kitchen as time to repaint approaches.

As long as you paint only the island base and don't paint the rest of the cabinets, the flooring will likely work with whatever color -- or whatever shade of gray -- you choose for your island. If it doesn't, you've only made a one relatively minor mistake that can be corrected later rather than an entire room full of mistakes.

One thing to consider: Generally speaking, it's easier to paint something light colored darker later than to try to paint something darker a lighter color later.

Would wait till all your walls are painted before choosing a back splash. Something worth considering: Choose ONE color from your countertop and use a single row of 4" tiles for your backsplash -- leaving the rest of the area between countertop and overhead cabinets a painted surface. You can then add lots of color -- any color you want -- by hanging colorful trivets and/or painted modern floating shelving for your S&P and/or sugar bowl or any other kitchen décor.

What about a warm gray greige for the island that might work with the floors. You can alway repaint the island later when you redo the floors. Of course I happen to love navy blue or even a medium french blue ...

I think it is a a great idea to do Navy. I am also doing my island in Polo Blue (similar to Navy Hale) BM. The cabinet company's color is Polo Blue. I love the combination of having an island in Navy.
