I love my Nest...but there are several considerations. The Pros generally hate them, and they are somewhat touchy and don't work well with more advanced systems. You absolutely want a system with a C wire for power to the Nest, it solves the intermittent offline issue from battery depletion.

I prefer the Ecobee after having both. The main selling point for me on the Ecobee is the room sensors you can place throughout the house.

Nest now has sensors too for their latest generation. I’ve had all three generations of the Nest and have liked it very much up until I got a new air conditioner recently. Now I think I’m seeing the c wire problem that has been mentioned, and I’m thinking about exploring other options.

I know there were limitations and circumstances in the past these devices weren't as capable as the better known industry brands. I don't know if those issues remain or have been fixed.

HVAC pros don't seem to be big fans of either of these two brands, there must be a reason.

If your blower has a common wire on its logic board then re-wire the thermostat with an 18-5 wire from Home Depot. Takes about 30 min and the C wire problem is solved.

I've had both the Nest and Ecobee thermostat, after only recently swapping I prefer the Ecobee. The nest doorbell is absolutely awesome, can't see myself with any interest to change.

Both are great thermostat. I think your choice depende of your necessity.

But if you prefer more strict temperature schedules—perhaps because your family's got a locked-in routine—with some added smart features such as voice control, the Ecobee4 might be a better choice for you.

For me the nest never felt very smart. I wanted the option of using smart features like running the furnace fan to balance temperatures between zones. There is no option of doing this on the nest. It couldn't figure out the schedule of when we were home, away to keep it comfortable. It was better than a programable thermostat but only because of geofencing.

I'm saving electricity by only running things on my system when it's required and almost every zone in my home has a consistent temperature.

Customizability of the Ecobee is just way better. Smart things with Samsung helps for sure. Does it have improvements to be made, yes, geofencing could be better between different users, but I have figured out a way to have it do everything I want.
