I painted my cabinets BM simply white. I love them.
My island is similar shape to yours (used to be two levels). When we did new counters we cut it to one level and extended it about 5” all they way around. I wish I had gone just an inch or so less because I am slightly too short to reach from side to side when washing the counter

What would you recommend to change the lighting?

Wow - I wouldn't paint those cabinets - they look great with your floor and seem to match the trim in the ajdoining room. To me, they are the element that gives the room some style. I would spend the $$ on better lighting, and a lighter rug, new stools that aren't dark wood (metal?), and maybe a new backsplash.

Your cabinets are beautiful. You might consider replacing the dark backsplash tile.

1. Cherry cabinetry will always have a slight orange tint - unless it is stained really dark.

2. You need lighting.

3. I would not recommend painting the cabinets, they are really nice. However, if you MUST do it, go select a color ( any color, any brand) then go find a PPG retailer and have them custom tint some Breakthrough for you. It is water based, self leveling and looks smooth even when rolled or brushed on. Clean the cabinets with TSP so there is zero oil and then prime them before painting.

I would personally paint the walls, put lights in - including under the counter, replace the floor and counter- and leave the cabinets.

Don't paint those great looking cabinets!

Replace the backsplash tile with a light cream color pulled from your granite. I would also simplify the design by having the same backsplash around your sink and stove.

I'm not a fan of the pendants. Maybe choose something with clear glass and make it less busy. Or ditch the pendants and install brighter recessed lights.

How do you want to make the island bigger? Wider or longer? It looks massive as it is.

Definitely do no paint these cabinets! My suggestion is to get cream or off-white barstools, chrome or nickel hardware, and a light colored backsplash. New lighting should be clear glass with chrome/nickel accents.

I think when people are saying lighting issues they mean you need to add lighting. Not just change the pendant lights.

beautiful cherry cabinets. not cheap either. Not the kind of wood you should paint. wood is back on trend and those are really very pretty. cherry wood will naturally change over the years. and, if they did an oil base clear coat, will take on a yellow hue as the top coat ages. in time you can have that stripped off and redone with a non yellowing top coat.

I'd switch out the backsplash to something lighter (go white if you like w/the tiles), bring in better lighting by doing new LED bulbs in a brighter white (including the under cab lights). try something in the 4500K range. it will take out the yellow. your under cab lights are very yellow, warm temp bulbs.

another option is a whiter countertop. all depends on how 'bright' you want it. I'd try the other recommendations first. it's cheaper.

you could also paint your walls a brighter white...it would be a nice contrast against the wood. both of these have white walls.

Try some cooler light LEDs for your recessed lights with the most lumen output and put them on a dimmer. Look for 3500-4000K...I find when you go much above 4000K it starts looking too blue.

I also vote new white splash, more lighting, new bright paint.

White subway tile, can lights, non-colored glass pendants.

Those cherry cabs are beautiful. Probably why the maker stained them.

I love your cherry cabinets! Go light and white with counters and backsplash but keep the paint off of those elegant beautiful cherry cabinetry. Instead follow what BethH said she showed fantastic examples of white or light counters.

If you do go white tile.. Don't do subway, do something unique.

*shrug* I'm not a big fan of wood cabinets, personally, whether they're "trendy" or not. So I don't think painting them would be such a horrible thing to do. But I do agree I'd try lighter countertops, walls, and backsplash first, just because the paint job would be such a pain (unless you call in a pro) and some of the pictures others have posted are really lovely. So it's worth trying that, unless you really dislike the cabinets themselves (vs. just thinking the room is too dark and brighter cabinets will make a difference).

First you are in desperate need of brighter walls and with this marble you have I would go for light coloured cabinets too. As for the lights I'll send some pics below

Also...forgot the island and the stools you got,

dark wood stools really don't make the kitchen look good

be creative- mix modern and classic styles-try something more eclectic for your kitchen. And lastly don't be afraid to mix gold and silver details together.

Nice cabinets, but it is dark in the room.

The dark backsplash is not helping bounce light into room.

Test it. Tape up some white/beige paper under on 1 side & compare the difference.

Need better lighting.

Test it.

Get a lamp in the house, get several bright & several differ hue bulbs & test in day & night time. Move light around & test it.

Here some info on light bulb hues.

Then, if want even brighter, a light neutral tone paint for walls. Paint 3 fav color strips on walls. Observe 2 days in sun & pm.

Please don’t paint the cabinets unless desperate. Besides the fact that they are beautiful, rule of thumb is stain over stain but paint over paint. If you must.

I see a lot of natural lighting, but wonder what your exposure is and time of day of these pictures? Additionally, you have can-lights and pendants. So, worse-lit rooms don’t look as dark.

The wall color, backsplash and chairs are not working with the cabinet and counter colors and you are not getting the right pop. The cabinet hardware is not helping.

I don’t feel a defined color scheme. There is no cohesion or strategy to the colors and thus nothing is serving as the best actor with supporting actors making it look great. I would hire a decorating consultant to give on-location color advice on the wall, chairs, cabinet hardware and backsplash.

If you can afford to replace the pendants, some updated chandeliers could make all the difference in the wow.
