Hi @HU-360027581, NuCedar is really amazing. We love it. If you go to the Jain Building Products website and look at their gallery (https://jainbuildingproducts.com/gallery) you will see actual homes in different colors shown in different lights. The Super White looks super, actually! But maybe you will find something else you like. My advice is to get some samples and look at them against your house at different times of the day, because the sun can cause the color hue to vary a bit. Good luck!

Hi Mellissa.... any builder who installs regular cedar shingles can install the nucedar as it goes on exactly the same... most framers who install siding also may install nucedar... also you can call the nucedar rep (shane) who is in your area (mass) and he may be able to help... he came out to our job before we started to review the project and gave me a basic install tutorial.

Hi, @Melissa Kueny, the contractor who built our home had his carpenters install the NuCedar. They treated it like any other building materials. Good luck.

@Judith Russell, we're (kind of) future neighbors! Building now on Midway/Ocean Road w John Ross and the pressure is on to pick cladding. I wish I'd seen this thread before we were out there 2 weeks ago, I would've asked if I can come see your siding! It looks great, I just feel like I need to touch it before I make such a huge commitment (is that weird?) Maybe next time? PS My husband tells me we were IN your house (construction site) last year when we were trying to chose a builder. Clearly John won!

No, it's not weird about needing to feel the material. Feel free to come by and touch away! When we did that, at a house on A Street in Seaview that had it, we were in disbelief that it was synthetic.

Do the builders need to be specially trained for the warranty?

This product seems closer to vinyl siding than NuCedar. I went to the site and looked for;

a warranty

photos of each side of it

if the stain/paint is baked on and resistant to fading

Do you need outside corner pieces or J channels, like vinyl

The price they give is for 1/2 a square (50sqft) If you double that it’s still about half the cost of a square (100sqft) of NuCedar. But, if it only lasts half as long you’ll have to pay to replace it.(because you can’t paint it, as per website)

If it wasn’t my forever house or a flip, I might use it.

NuCedar is a solid shingle that looks, feels, and cuts just like a real cedar shingle. You can do designs and weave the outside corners with them.
I don’t work for NuCedar but I have and love the product. You get what you pay for.

Does any one have experience with 5" vs 7" exposure on NuCedar? I know 5" cost more because it requires more material. I would love any thoughts on this please. Thanks! Also if you have any experience with this "curling problem in the heat". Thinking of using on a home in the south.

The 5” reveal is the most you can reveal with the 13 inch shingle and 7 inch is the most you can reveal with the 18 inch shingle…. So that’s the norm with NuCedar. Most photos of NuCedar show 5” from what I can tell. If you can find all the photos from earlier in this thread. As for the curling, just make sure they glue down the first 3 or 4 rows if they are near blacktop, asphalt shingles, or a dark metal roof…(like a second floor or dormer) I only had one problem area due to the reflection off a skylight on the south side (full sun) causing one spot of curling. As you can see in the photo, the glued down lower shingle rows didn’t budge.

Can anyone give a ballpark price of what NuCedar costs per square foot? We are building a new home in Kansas (currently framing) and trying to decided if NuCedar Shake Siding will fit into our budget. It's beautiful! Like Jane Doe we are considering Tando as well. I am still researching so I appreciate all the input on this thread!

It was $900 per square in the Northeast in the fall of 2021 heading towards an additional 15% price increase. This is a per square price..You divide the square footage by 100 to get the number of squares needed of siding. NuCedar is a fantastic product but we were building a 52 square home which at this price point we were unable to afford.

We just bought NuCedar for our project in Massachusetts and got the shingles for about $275 per box ($1100 per square) although we were quoted another place at $325 per box. But overall, you'd be best to call around. We ordered from Riverhead, Jesse Chadwick who was awesome. With the increase in the cost of natural cedar shingles, NuCedar didn't seem as far out of reach besides saving on painting and ongoing maintenance.

We started installation last week and are very happy with the product, although we did notice it can dent easily with ladders placed against the siding. Also, we are applying with a 7" reveal to match the existing patter on our 100 year old house. There is also a little scoring tool you can purchase ($100) to touch up any areas to match the rest.

@Judith Russell Hello! It looks like you installed NuCedar over 2 years ago. Will you share how it is holding up and your experience with the seasons? We have a cedar shake home in Michigan and have replace the cedars shingles twice in 20 years due to cupping and curling. We hope to find a synthetic cedar-look that will withstand the test of time.

@silvergrass studio The NuCedar is great - looks brand new. The installation was really impeccable as well. But I'm surprised that you had those problems with cedar shakes. Is the warping a typical problem in your environment? Are you on the lake? Hopefully you won't have that problem with the NuCedar.

The Nucedar shingle: How is the color variations achieved in the Cedar (NC-08) color palette? Is it via slightly different shades of paint colors? Is the base pvc material white?

No idea how they do it, most likely a trade secret, but it's great, very natural-looking.

Anyone have any update price per box?

The color variation, or striations, are caused by the light hitting the rough surface. The grain or rough sawn look is pressed into the surface of the product.

It is solid white PVC with a baked on paint coating. If you use the shingles, they cut and feel just like cedar. A paint dauber is filled with touch up paint to cover cut/white edges.

I was just quoted $463 per box! For context, the product is 25 sqft per box or 4 boxes per square. That’s roughly $18.53 per square foot!

Does this seem astronomical? Or have prices skyrocketed?

loved reading all the comments. We have to make a siding decision by tomorrow Monday. Have been struggling between colors of Argos and Wordly gray. As comments were made earlier , I feel the same colors are slightly different than the on the house example homes. Argos sample appears to be gray/blue in tone versus lighter gray on an actual house that we saw. The wordly gray gives a beigier hue than gray on the board but the house looks grayish....so how do we decide?? Any help/guidance to make the decision is appreciated. Also, Appreciate the comment to get mutiple prices from distributors is a good reminder. Trying to gauge the labor expectations ifi anyone can comment . I am in Rhode IsIand . Good to know the install is similar to wood cedar install. Thanks in advance on any comments.

as Jain bldg products (you can just email them from their website) for addresses where this is installed in your area? and if close enough, go visit. This is what we did and discovered one of the colors we were considering we did not like in person. We are in same boat trying to decide and there is absolutely no Wordly Gray installed anywhere near us in the midwest...but I bet out east there is!

If you are anywhere in the Syracuse/Rochester NY area, I can put you in touch with the guys that did the install on my house on Canandaigua Lake, they're awesome. I did Aleutian Blue with the 5 inch reveal it came out great. People knock on my door and ask me what kind/color shingle it is. The rough cut shingles are virtually impossible to tell from actual Cedar even when you touch them. Everything else looks plastic to me. kev203@yahoo.com

Kevin, what did the cost per square come to with labor and material.

I know this thread isn't current, but I would not use it again. It was a fortune, the installers had a hard time with it, and you can't even powerwash it. I would not use it again. I feel like throwing out the whole $37k and starting over.

I feel like this product is only worth comparing with real natural wood primed+painted shingles.

If you are considering vinyl, this is not a comparable product. Vinyl is much cheaper and had much different characterists (many characteristics are better than wood and NuCedar).

For me, the cost of this product is too high and I would only consider if the cost of primed+painted natural wood was within 10% or more of NuCedar. If NuCedar is more than 10% more expensive that primed painted natural wood, go with natural wood.
