When you said 'matte' did you mean 'flat'?

usually you use a bit of gloss where you expect scrubbing—kitchen and baths—but matte everywhere else. it’s most restful for the eye, most forgiving of drywall imperfections and repairs, and you don’t usually need to scrub down the walls in most living spaces!!

Different paint holds up better under demanding circumstances. Please read Consumer Reports to determine how bullet-proof you want the paint to be. For trim it makes a significant different too.

I had Regal Matte in my last house. I liked the look but would not use it if you have young children that have dirty hands everywhere. (Stairwell, bathrooms) I did not find it highly scrubbable. For minor dirty spots it was fine for wiping but not on a daily basis. My kids were older.

Just double checked what my builders used on my new house 1 year ago- Regal Select Matte as well. Have not had to scrub. I have to say it touched up beautifully when my painters were here for 1 year touch up. Can’t even tell.

Their eggshell is marketed as "scrubbable." If you have a lot of imperfections in your wall, use matte, otherwise, eggshell is the best choice.

I don’t know how it compares to your paint, but I have BM Aura in a satin & semi gloss finish in my house. It’s some of the least scrubbable paint, especially for the price and considering the sheen level. I can’t imagine anything matte or eggshell by them. I found the Valspar I used in my previous house to be much more scrubbable. I know there are a lot of BM fans out there, but I have not been impressed by my experience with their paint at all.

I'm a Valspar gal too. I prefer satin for walls (and ceiling,) semi-gloss for trim. I like a bit of reflectivity in my surroundings.

I would go with flat, no shin on ceiling and walls. Shin is good for trim, baths and kitchen.

go one step up. I did the matte in my hallway and bedroom. if you have kids w/dirty hands, the matte does not wipe off. at all. I've had to paint over dirt spots.

try the eggshell. use the matte on the ceiling. and use a primer on the red wall before you paint.

you can leave the brick until after you paint. see how it looks. Do you have any artwork for that blank wall? will you be getting new window coverings? what about a new light fixture?
