Dining table too big for space

We are moving into our home next week, and we just realized that our dining table might be too long for the space. Dining room is 15 ft. long and 13 ft. wide. Only place for the matching china cabinet in the wall facing the length, so that takes care of 2 ft. depth, but what is needed to open the doors to the cabinet. Then begins the 8 ft. table, which has no removable extensions. Allowing about 3 ft.? for the end chair to pull out, we're looking at 15 ft. right there. And at this point I can't even put a chair at the other end. Unfortunately this is a custom made table and cannot be cancelled. HELP! Any ideas anyone? I'm trying to picture it at an angle but I don't think it would look right. BTW, I have no pictures of the dining room yet.

i bet it can be cancelled. yes you'll lose a hefty deposit but probably not as much as if you take delivery and try to sell it to someone else.

you lost me on the math, but if you didnt have the china closet in the room would it all work better?

last question, would the table lend itself to having some of the middle removed by a cabinet maker?

You lost me on the math, too. Is the table finished? If not, get the carpenter to shorten it. Even if it is finished, it can still be modified, it will just cost more.

Is there no where else in the house to put the china cabinet?

Okay, thanks to all of you. Ninigret, no it can't be cancelled, and rather than lose any money, Hubby said if it doesn't fit comfortably in the space, then we'll order a smaller one and I'll use the larger one in my Sewing Room. Becky, okay here is the math, 2 ft. depth for the china cabinet, and 2 more ft. to open the doors, 1 ft. X 2 for each end chair, the chairs are each 2 ft., so we are at 10 ft. so far, add in the 8 ft. table and there we have it ~ 18 ft. from wall to end of D.R. Dining room is 15 ft. long by 13 ft. wide. Claire Larece I do have one picture that was in the Listing (remember we haven't moved in yet), but the last owner's table is in the room. Table won't be delivered until end of July, but I think I can get one off the website. Kathryn P. no other place for the china cabinet. Will work on posting some pics. The more I talk about with other people, the more I'm convinced that I need to get a smaller table. I'm absolutely in love with this one however, because it would fit my entire family of 13. Grandkids don't want to sit at the counter any more.

Okay, here are some photos: If you look at the photo on the far left, you can't see it, but there is a 3 foot wall right after that picture, that defines where the dining room ends. Behind the wall is the back door.

Here is the table, I think this might be the 6 footer, mine is 8ft. and has 12 chairs.

And here is the china cabinet, which, as you can see, can only be placed on the back wall where the high chair rail is.

I think my goose is cooked!!!

Keep the new table in the dining room and get rid of the china cabinet. Keep your china in the kitchen cupboards.

2 more ft. to open the doors

I missed the 2' to open the doors in your original post. How frequently do you access the china cabinet doors? If it is just occasionally I wouldn't add that 2' into the equation. Also, how frequently do you have all the grandkids over at one time? Can you move the two end chairs to a wall and pull them over when you have the whole bunch over for dinner? We are all guilty of trying to get a room that is big enough for everything, but when I look back over the years everyone squeezing into a not-quite-big-enough-room over the holidays is part of what made it so special. :) Now, if you have them over all the time, squeezing in isn't fun!

I'm absolutely in love with this one however, because it would fit my entire family of 13. Grandkids don't want to sit at the counter any more.

I love the idea of all the grandkids at the table. I'd look for other options before going with the smaller table. :)

sorry, i'm still dazed by the idea of a huge table in my sewing room. i'd sell my grandkids for that!

2’ feet of china cabinet depth from wall, 3’ of end wall right so move table half a foot away from 3’ wall towards the left. Basically you’re going to measure the wall on the left of the window 11’ you should be able to center the table from that measurement and you will still have room.

Since nothing can be changed at this point, don't worry until you receive the table and can play with the arrangement. I think it will work out ....with the option of not always using the end chairs, the fact that you don't eat with the cabinet doors open, and you can move the China cabinet of center. Let us know....
