If it is Holly it can be cut back hard and will regrow thicker.

yes.. an ID is a good way to start ...

if you do a full rejuvenation of those plants ... with no insult to the massive mature root mass ... you will probably be amazed how fast it recovers ... and why not try ...

BUT .. and there always is a big butt around .... that gorgeous house screams for a relandscaping ...and if in a year or two .. if you are right back where you started.. it might time for them to go to the big garden in the sky ... or the local dump ...

soo if it were me.. i would try option one first.. but keep in the back of my mind... that it might be time for something new ...

whether you skip option one... is up to you and your budget including he cost of your own labor ...

btw.. is the house painted or sided???

You can cut it down to maybe a foot or less and it will come back better looking. Do it right away so it has time to recover fairly well before autumn. Of if you don't think you would like even a shorter, renewed version of it then take it out. If there is no exposed foundation you don't need shrubs concealing the base of the house anyway. And if there is you can do it with a more attractive assortment of different kinds instead of a single row of one kind going all the way from one corner to the other.

And btw, yes, it's a Holly.

The wall below the siding is brick accented concrete. the hedge is hiding the brick looking concrete

I don’t know what zone your in or how much or little sun that spot gets, but if your ok with a deciduous bush, I think 4 or 5 (depending on the actual size of that space) Endless Summer hydrangea bushes or the Everlasting Hydrangea bushes would be stunning there. They would definitely be a showstopper.
