I think the room looks lovely, it's not too dark with the stained wood trim. Do you just not like it? In that case you should definitely paint it. Perhaps you are missing some color on walls, making the white walls and dark trim too stark for you?

Maybe a color in the top three rows would warm the room for you? Sherwin Williams colors

Have you tried a couple of brighter colored pillows? The room looks great - just needs a little splash of color.

Sage green walls and a complimentary rug and pillows.
Or paint the trim a green but if you do that I would probably paint the beams too.

Leave the wood. The space can warm up with some fabric and paint ( as mentioned above.) Pulling a color from the fireplace is a good one ( as light as possible!). Some soft curtains can tie in your new fabric accents. I like the room. It's already cozy. Just lighten it up with color and fabric.

We have a very similar stone on our fireplace as well as the dark wood. We left the wod alone. . Painting the walls a light color, those very related to the colors Mforr showed, made a huge differences! Our fireplace wall has a few stones with hints of gold or yellow but basically looks like yours. We currently want to tweak our color, after years of living with it, but it is still better than white.

I think you'll be pleased to see what paint can do.
