Cat chew toys - any suggestions?

last modified: 6 years ago

My cat Bessie has been chewing on stuff today: my fingers, the computer cord, a roll of toilet paper. She's 7 and not teething. She's just being kinda mouthy with things. She loves to play with the usual stuff (bottle caps, contact lens cases) batting them around and losing them. But I've never thought about getting her something specifically for chewing. Any ideas?

ETA: She just had a good checkup at the vet's and her teeth and gums (unlike her twin brother's) are in pristine condition.

My cats like to get into cardboard boxes, but not chew on them. And I don’t think I want to encourage chewing on everyday items, like toilet paper. What I’m looking for is a recommendation for a toy specifically aimed at chewing for cats.

My cat used to suck on his catnip mouse but he didn’t chew it. There are chew toys made for cats but the reviews don’t look great. Biggest con I saw on a lot of them is that the cats aren’t interested.

Filling the spaces with treats/dry food gets easier the more you do it. :-)

Well, you can lead a cat to a chew toy, but you can't make 'em chew. I think my cats' thing for toilet paper is more an attention-getting device (feed me now!), and, of course, it works. I was struck yesterday by how chewy Bessie is. I will keep looking.

mdln, I just noticed that there's food inside the balls. Very clever.

Those treat balls are really neat! I've not seen those. My experience with a chewing cat is that, as you say, Bunny - you can lead 'em to a chew toy but can't make 'em chew! Penny has a thing for phone charger cords, so we've had to train ourselves to keep them well out of her reach. Other wires? Not so much, but those charger cords must be deeeeeee-LISH.

Our George is a chewer, too. I catch him gnawing on power cords a lot, and even on the hose that connects the toilet water supply!

The treat balls work if your pet is food motivated. You have to press the treats in between the rubber teeth. The pet then chews on the rubber ball working to get the treats out.

What is it with charger cords? I have my laptop plugged in all the time and I think Bessie is focusing on it because I'm at my laptop and it's part of her seeking attention.

Ever since switching the cats from dry to wet food a couple of weeks ago, they are super food-motivated. Less calories, who knew? So dry food in a ball sounds like it might work, but is it a little mean, since the food is there, just beyond their reach? Or do they eventually work it loose?

Oh, absolutely, they work the treats loose. You can also you can also put them in somewhat loose, and make it easier for them to pull them out.
