I've recently seen a chipmunk in the yard and we have a baby bunny living in the front perennial bed. I have four blueberry bushes with blueberries starting on them. Last year, I put netting over one and it was such a pain in the neck. hard to get it to cover the whole thing and anchor it and a bird got under it. Then taking it off and untangling it was no fun either. I've read that some growers who have too many bushes to net, use pretend snakes and predator birds around their patches that they think work if you keep moving them around. I've done nothing so far and I may end up watching the animals get them.

Having mainly birds (resident catbird family especially) get the blueberries long before I do, I got some Crop Cages from Gardeners.com last year. Not as much trouble to deal with as the netting/stake DIY system I had previously tried. Their set-up gives you the steel poles and formed netting cover which has zippers for access. Also tall enough to walk into and re-usable, of course. I was able to harvest my blueberries beautifully all season, so I was happy!

Which reminds me that I must get those cages out of the garden shed and installed this week...

Thanks Roxanna - those look great and while they are on sale they're pretty expensive. Did you have to buy one for each bush?

To protect my blueberries from birds I added a hoops made from PVC pipes arching over my 2 rows of young blueberry bushes covered with bird net. It seems to have helped, though I am not sure what I will do when they get bigger.

There are more (and larger) crop cages available on Amazon UK. I decided to invest in one after my blueberries got too big for the PVC/bird netting combo. They are expensive, but I ended up moving them back and forth between strawberries and blueberries. In the end totally worth it.
