First, why are you considering it. Also, Slate is notorious for not being flat. Can you live with a countertop that has nautral groves and ridges in it?

I think slate counters can be gorgeous. But the chipping would be an issue for me. And it is not the most durable as far as hardness, so it scratches pretty easily.

The slate quarried from VT or Maine is not the typical slate seen in box stores. I'm not sure if I can mention the company from these states mentioned but it starts with the letters "She" and states on its website that their slate is "unmatched in strength and durability" and "honed to a satin smooth finish". I would really like to hear from someone who has a working knowledge of this slate.

Of COURSE you can mention it. How the heck do you expect to get other thoughts on it if you don't? (But don't believe the "unmatched..." claims. Everyone says that.) There are certainly other companies that quarry and fabricate slate in Vermont.

My neighbour has slate counters. Not sure that they are from Vermont, but they are lovely. I know that it doesn't scratch as easily as some soapstone (mine, for instance).

I just ordered samples. They have honed slate from Vermont. It is gorgeous. It's non porous and very durable.

I got a grey, non fading green, and a purple / green mottled.

I have these floors in my existing home and I love both how they look and how they have held up over 20+ years. I also have a cleft slate counter in my master bath. it's 10 years old and it's perfect. Light seal once every 3 years and nothing else. Wipe with some soapy water.

I'd LOVE to do the slate - it's just not modern enough for my build / big island. I need something with more "wow" - but it's a beautiful material and durable as heck.
