Poa trivialis, lets talk about it

Thanks to the forums on here my knowledge of maintaining a lawn and landscape has increased dramatically. One thing that has improved is identifying weeds and grassed. Unfortunately I have come to find out that I have both poa annua and trivialis.


I use to think the seeds coming up in late spring were good but it turns out that they were poa. I'm not sure when kbg goes to seed but I know that fescue need to get tall before doing so. Annua is difficult to deal with but it seems like trivialis takes the cake. I have heard that Velocity, Tenacity and even round up has failed when applying to it. Is this the kryptonite to great looking lawns? What can be done to stop this invader?

    Other than herbicides it sounds like good cultural practices can lower the pressure of trivialis. Triv is very suceptible to disease, so instead of applying a fungicide let the disease take the weak. Triv has a small root structure and spreads by stolons so grow the surrounding turf thick to fight against the stolons. Also heat stress will limit it's growth but unfortunately it's a perennial. Since it spreads by stolons aeration might have to wait. The broken pieces of the stolon could spread by the machine to other areas of the lawn or be brought from other lawns.
