They're lovely in the garden, but yes, they'll compost easily. If you don't achieve high enough temperatures, they'll still produce offspring. You can also leave them in place, if you wanted, and plant in them again next year.

Straw makes an excellent brown for composting.

This is the 2nd. yr. for them and I'm not going to straw bale garden next yr.

DH has enough garden boxes that he plants veggies in so I'm going to just do my flowers.

Yes, break them up and mix in high nitrogen stuff like coffee grounds, grass clippings, horse manure, urine. Wet and toss.
