Complete novice; when to propogate by cutting in my Zone?

I know next to nothing about propagating roses via cutting. I've read a number of reputable sources on the subject, but none seem to address one question I have: when is the best time to start a cutting in my Zone --7a? I live in central Maryland.

I specifically want to root a cutting off a rose bush of my mother's. She recently passed away and the rose came from her father, who was a gardener on the BF Jones estate outside of Pittsburgh. So it's really important to me, and I'd like to avoid screwing it up :)

Usually, the best time to take a cutting is from a stem with an open flower.

Mad gallica is correct. Is this a rose you have in your possession? I would suggest taking multiple cuttings in case one doesn't take. There are many ways to do this. I'm having good luck this year just sticking the cutting in the ground in a shady space and letting nature take its course... But I have quite a bit of rain here. There is a thread here on using air propagators which might help you had your bets. Feel free to ask any questions and there are many old posts on propagating that you could search.

Thank you both! I do have the rose bush in my possession--it's in my parents' back yard. It's been in the family since at least the early 1950's and I want to preserve it for as long as possible :)
