A gift from our moderator starting to produce quiet a few figs. I have 2 tree's now both grafted on Chicago Hardy rootstock, actually growing too good but can complain.

    Here Bob is our Hardy Chicago bought long ago from Paradise Nursery whenmthey were they were open, most dominant leaf pictures dug up from fig disk 10 years ago.

    Fig taste can vary slightly from year to year depending on climate seems here though our growing season gives them ample time to show off their beauty and also taste among my favorite next to Black Madeira as they take the time to ripen nicely and not too quickly.

    Here is example from Sep -2015 from 2/3yr old as the adult was put inground but they do not always look as nice.as some years the bloom(pretty blueish) on the figs may not show its beauty as much. This particular picture shows if i may say so a perfect ripe Hardy Chicago with a classic hangmans neck and sap sealing the eye which they do not do always .

    This fig above was picked to show interior about 4 minutes later in dated picture which is too small to see on forum.

    2015 was a good growing season for the figs here as stated they may not always look as nice inside and out but despite that the taste of hardy chicago is really good with a rich fig taste and slightly acidic and not overly sweet .

    Very underrated in my humble opinion because it is so widely distributed.

    Years back on f4fun i posted some minor differences between it and EL.Sals which they obtained from Belleclare nursery , i also grew and similar leaf albeit smaller and the figs were sweeter less acidic just not as strong tasting.

      Damn, wish I had that many figs. I have 1 small fig smaller than your smallest fig... but it looks like another 5 just woke up and are starting to form... So I have 6 hahah. Do those figs turn purple?

      Grew them for some years they are a dark fig yes and here near Chicago ripen late ,tree along with several others never woke up this season.

      Martin, what do you mean not waking-up, did you leave them outside? The Madeira never made it, bummer.

      No they were winter stored as always in garage.

      I have Noire de Barbentane, which is very similar, on it's own roots. Very prolific tree and pumps out the figs, and ripens a little earlier. They're round and purple/black, very good taste. Mine is in ground, dies back every year, but then regrows to a 6 ft tree.

      Rayrose yes NdB is very similar so there was no need to get a Sollies replacement.

      Noire almost did not make it but came back from soil level in July grown in large container.

      I'm drooling.. wonderful detailed description of your HC fig Martin! I'm always on the lookout to keep a record of fig flavors and your description is perfect for saving in my fig book!

      I've always seen comments about Mt.Etna types all being similar enough that there's no need to be choosy with which one you go for. Is the difference large enough that you would recommend Hardy Chicago over Sal's EL?

      Kvetchlambkin i could not recommend one over the other because it is personal taste. For me only tend to like less sweeter figs hardy chicago does that personally over sals .

      Ahh I see I didn't realize the sweetness played a factor in your preference along with the flavor intensity. Thanks for clarifying! Really awesome information to know which is sweeter and more acidic etc
