Dining room update

I’d like to replace this dining room table with something we would use more. This is a garage sale find we had painted to match the white chairs many years ago and it’s quite wobbly. Ideally, I’d like a table that could extend to accommodate more people when needed. I do like the white finish though, replacing chairs is optional. Most of the time we eat at an island in the kitchen but would like to make this space more user friendly, but still attractive since it’s right inside the front door. I need your recommendations on a table, maybe chairs and where to find them. White seems hard to find these days, at least I’m not having much luck.

I really like your room! Sorry, I’m not of much help with a white table (other than suggest that you do online searches of “white extendable dining table” in places like Wayfair). But for as long as you’re using your current table, you might be able to stabilize the wobbliness with some carpenters glue in the joints.

Well just start using it. Get the table stabilized, tighten screws or whatever needs to be done. Putting a table cloth on would give it a more casual look for every day dining. 2 Chairs each side of table not 3. Put one in each corner. I would think eating at the island would not be that comfortable.

Beautiful space. Love the bold choice of wall color. I think you are right about needing a white color for the dining furniture. Very nice looking room!

I don't know where you live, but it should be a snap for you if you are willing to buy used furniture.

People are not entertaining in their homes on the grand scale like they used to, many of the homes that are being built now don't even have dining rooms large enough to accommodate 10 - 12 people.

Look at all the online site for dining sets and you will hit pay dirt.

They will likely be very fine wood, too, with chairs and leaves, and may even have the table pads, too.

It is your choice if you want to paint them white.

Check ebay, craigslist, Goodwill, all the local charity and consignment stores, (don't forget to try to bargain) 1stDibs, Viyet, Chairish, Everything But The House, Offerup, Letgo

Thank you for the suggestions so far. I will also look on the secondhand sights suggested. I find myself drawn to the look of a double pedestal or trestle table. I have never seen one like this anywhere with the wood base and white top but I do like it.

Another thought was an aged or reclaimed wood but I’m not sure if I can pull that off in here with the already antique buffet...anyone have a thought on that? Such as a pottery barn or restoration hardware look?

The Cameron Extension Dining Table from Ethan Allen comes in different finishes and would look lovely with Nightfall top and Cotton base:

Act One, that style is lovely! Looks like it may come with an extension top as well but I may have to visit a design center to find out. Do you think the dark top would be okay with so much dark going on in there?

You could get a table that matches the wood tone of your buffet. I don't think the table has to be white.

The table opens to 110" with one 24" leaf. The Earl Grey finish would also work if you want to go lighter on the color.

So I did a little shopping around today. Okay, maybe a lot and brought home some wood samples. I am admittedly a little sticker shocked at some of what I found. There was a similar model to the EA model pictured above which I checked out at Pier 1 very reasonably priced but the finish options don't work.

The one Act One Designs selected at Ethan Allen in the cotton finish has an amber glaze that isn't working well with my current chairs. Definitely can't do all cotton finish (top included which is an option not available online) with my current chairs anyway. There is another white called Cirrus white which may be an option. I guess this comes in a version with a "rustic top" that I noticed online tonight but need to ask about when I return the samples. This one also doesn't get quite as big as I would like.

I also checked out Canadel at a local design shop and quite like some of the designs in their Champlain line. Quite distressed though and not sure if I like the white finish that is so distressed. So this leaves me wondering if I should do a white base/stained top or totally change and just go for a stained finish? And though the sizing is better than the EA line as it extends a little further, the price is almost 2x as much. OUCH!! And this is a table only, no chairs.

Then I ventured to another furniture store in town and was introduced to Nichols & Stone which has many customizable options as well. All with a hefty price tag though. So now I've left myself totally confused. Should I stick with the thought of white? Go with white/stained top? Move on to a lighter warm stain color maybe one of the lighter tones in my buffet but keep the white chairs for now and in the future upgrade to some upholstered chairs? What I really want is a 42x80" table that extends to close to 120" with a durable finish at a reasonable price. I'll post some of what I'm now considering and see if anyone has an opinion to help my very confused mind now.

And to loobab, I am not opposed to used furniture as that's how I got my current table. I've been looking and will continue to do so but haven't found anything. Finding something takes a whole lot of patience and looking, and looking and looking...I wasn't familiar with some of the sites you speak of and need to investigate those too. Maybe the hunt will be worth the money saved after what I learned today.

While I'd probably not want used furniture with upholstry, good solid built wood furniture is a totally different issue. I like my 1950's era china cabinet better that much of the newer stuff on the market.

If you've never experienced the "adventure" of exploring one of the larger Habitat for Humanity Restore Stores, please do. At this time of year when people are remodeling many different items are donated, included, from time to time, really nice dining room sets.

Also check out local charity thrift stores such as slavation army or goodwill stores that carry used furniture. Even if you don't find an entire set, you may find either a table or a set of chairs you like.

An afterthought: while some stores with the word "antique" on their door will have some seriously high prices, occasionally you can find a bargain there. It could be worth a look.

Do keep your rings art on the wall -- like that .

I forgot to ask one more thing. I really like the table base with the scrolls, but will this work with my current chairs with the X back? I'm thinking not....and unless I can find a bargain, right now I'm not buying chairs.

Thanks suezbell, I will explore antique stores as well. I do know of a furniture and home goods type consignment store in our area as well and should make a visit there. I just feel like the style I'm looking for is a newer style and will be hard pressed to find it used but I'm gonna try!

My opinion, a white table like the one you have is ideal in your room. If you do stained, it will be dark compared to the dark walls and will not have that visual impact of a white table. Would you consider refurbishing the one you have (or paying someone to do it, which would be cheaper than buying new)?

I finally made a decision and ordered the EA table ACT ONE posted above. Went with all white, in the Cirrus White as it best coordinated with the chairs which will stay until one of our kiddos needs them, likely in a year or two at the most. I had so many samples here and the wood tops just didn’t pull it all together. They were beautiful in the store then just didn’t look right when I brought them home. I hope I made the right choice and I love it when it arrives! Thanks to all for your suggestions, I really did take them all to heart. Should be here before Thanksgiving, I’ll post a pic when it’s in.

Well, the table finally arrived yesterday. I’d say it was worth the wait. Only issue is it looks silly with fewer than three chairs on each side due to the pedestal placement. I’m back and forth if I like the head chairs there or flanking the buffet. Just thankful it is here for the Holidays and I can contemplate what I want to do for chairs next. These aren’t perfect no need to rush. Thanks again for all who helped with this dilemma.

Your table looks great! Enjoy your holidays :)

Looks lovely. I think if you put the 2 side chairs in towards the middle of the table (each side) , would look better

(when not in use). When being used they would have to separated of course.

Your table looks lovely, you made a great choice!

Would you mind sharing where you got your wall candle sconces? I've been looking for some with a hanging lantern look like yours.
Thank you. Angel I wish that would work but because of the pedestal and the legs on the chairs two won’t fit in the middle and I can’t push them any further together. See the third pic.

And heartlight, they are from Pottery Barn and I think are still available. You are in luck!

    Heidi,

I am considering this EA table in the Rustic version for my kitchen. Have you been happy with it? Has it held up ok? We are looking for a quality all wood piece that can withstand the daily beating our 3 kids will put on it! ;)

Thank you for your update! I ordered the Rustic table with a Milk White base. Will take 10-12 weeks to get it but I am hoping I love it when it arrives! Thanks for your tip about the chair placement too, that was really helpful!

I’d love to see pics when it arrives. I hope it works well for your family!
