Beautiful office! I don’t think a rug is needed - your floors are gorgeous, and it may be harder to roll your desk chair on a rug. Not sure though, how big the rest of the room is - you might like a rug in another part of the room... Can you post more pictures?

No rug, but you will probably need a floor pad to roll that chair on the wooden floor. Actually, same goes if you have a rug, will need a pad specially made for a rug to roll the chair on.

Here is the room (fairly small) and narrow.

You may want to change the position of the desk to:

(a) face the window or

(b) face the french doors - in which case you might have room for

a credenza type piece of furniture to hold printer etc. but would have wires to contend with back of desk.

thanks. I wish we could go that route, however we needs the outlets for the work computer which are only at the back of the wall where we currently have the desk.

@angel18432: I’d be similarly tempted, but here’s the problem I find with modern offices: computer screens. Desks facing the doorway (or guest chairs) don’t work any more, as the screens form a clumsy dividing wall. And facing a window is not much better, as the resulting brightness contrast (bright window behind a not-nearly-as-bright screen) is very tiring on the eyes.

Actually, I think if you put the desk basically with the front of it under the windows and towards the back wall you could run the wires on the right side of the desk, snaking them around the edge of the floor and to the outlets. By the time you put your chair at the desk I'm thinking all the outlets will not be showing from the doorway.

Just angle it a bit, facing window and wires will be hidden.

Very nice office. To finish it off, I would suggest a flat weave area rug, a lounge/reading chair, a floor lamp and a few more plants. Based on the desk length, I'm estimating a 6ftx8ft rug will work in the room. I don't see the chair wheels being an issue with a flat weave rug. A flat weave rug will need a non-slip pad, Ikea has one called Baring that is affordable and has no extra thickness. I would place the reading chair diagonally (and floor lamp) in the corner behind the left french door. You might also have space for an ottoman.

Thanks Linda. Next to the door is very small however, and we could not put a chair in a diag position. What color do you suggest for a rug?

YES rug, how u can stay or design a room without a rug, all the best designers use rugs in every room, please put a rug there (somthing thin and simple)! U will see the big difference,

yes please, the furniture has to be placed on the rug.

a rug always helps to bring color into a room and define the space. just look for something you like. I know you say you don't want to change the layout but what does it hurt to try? I hate looking at a wall if there is a view to look at. I also like being able to see the entry door and like having easy access to shelving directly behind me so all I have to do is turn around in my chair. I would place my desk so I face the window and 36" in front of the shelving you have to allow for room to pull out your chair. place the desk so that you can still open and close the french doors. wires can be run on the floor behind or beside the desk and won't interfere with anything because you will access it from the door side. alternately just turn the desk in its current location so that you face the window forming an L with that wall. doing this should allow for enough room to place another chair in the corner by the window for another person. getting a small cubby unit for on top of the desk similar to the top of this desk will help with organization and hiding wires.

I think because of the placement of the desk that you would be better to go with a hide rug because of it's irregular shape and it won't define the area. Otherwise your room is going to look off balance as everything is ending up on one end of the room and even if you extend a rug towards the door, it will look odd that part of it is by itself where I think a hide rug will be more forgiving because of it's irregular shape.

Something like this in front of the desk?

A hide rug far enough away from the desk so you can roll the chair without getting to the rug. Or a large, flat weave rug that goes under the area where the chair will roll.

That looks like it has a higher pile on it than a real cowhide. If that is the case, I'd look for one that has a lower pile like a real one. If you are going to go with a faux, try to find one that looks like a real one. Something with black in it would be good in your space.

White and black or creamy? I didn't think of doing black. Should I do a desk lamp too? What color?

I'd look for both and then we can decide. Similar to the one I posted would be a good possibility if you want an idea what to look for. Yes, on a desk lamp. It looks like the drawer pulls and base of your chair is brushed brass?

I know you seem dead against moving the desk, but if you put it on an angle, the wires will be to the right and not seen as they will be on the side of the desk, something like this. Will look so much better.
