Appears darker in bathrooms due to lighting. Also the veining is very heavy in those rooms.

Soft whites, plain for tile , Simple vanities in soft white........counter tops in a honed black granite. The flooring WILL limit you. Change it if you want a clean slate and many more options. Beware the outer space bath in Tuscany.: ) no matter a change in flooring.

Unfortunately, the flooring has to stay because it runs throughout the main living areas of my house. Everyone is telling me to go with brown cabinets but I agree that white will give it a more modern feel.

There is nothing limiting to it. I had crema marfil in my guest bathroom in my condo and I painted the walls a rich red and had a dark brown cherry vanity. Instead of making the room feel dark, it actually made it feel rich. The shower was all crema marfil (you can see it in the mirror.)

If I were you, I'd choose a soft white for trim, with a soft white for counters too. The counter above in mine was a marble but the name escapes me. Choose a rich color for the walls. It can be a blue, green, red, etc and then choose a soft white tile for the shower unless you can match the color and tone of the crema marfil for the shower tiles. Then I'd choose to repeat the same tile.

The interesting thing about my bath above is that when I sold it, the new owner painted the vanity white and the walls beige to match the shower tile. Instead of lightening the room, it actually made it appear dingy since there is no natural light in that bathroom.

The floor tile is gorgeous and very neutral so I don't see any reason not to keep it! Would you consider stained wood cabinets (instead of painted)? If it were me, I'd do stained wood cabinets to give some contrast with the tile. Your white trim looks nice with the flooring so I think you could use white or cream colored tile and countertops. At least that's what I would do if it were my bathroom. I'd stay away from gray since I don't think that will work well with your flooring.

Enlightened by cpartist's post; rich can be muted-darkish, and a good thing! So much talk these days about "light and airy" make room look bigger.... ?

Yes, I have white cabinets in there now but am putting all new wood cabinets in and open to stained cabinets. Love the darkest brown cabinets but afraid will make bathroom dark. Even a lighter walnut stained brown is nice also. Then Im back to square 1 with everything cream and brown! What other colors could I tie in to give it an updated modern look and feel?

Make your eyes ignore the floor. But realize it could be a shock as compared with the Tucany rest .

As for trying to add another stone or marble ? No. If you want an entirely clean slate? Put an engineered wood floor in the bath. If adults are using it , it doesn't get any wetter than a kitchen floor .

This is our bathroom with the same colour floor as yours. The cabinet is a brown/ cherry colour with black granite. The shower is similar in colour as the floor and the walls are painted brown. This is from the previous owner. It looks very rich together

I have a contractor/company building for me! But I love the vibe of that vanity!

So now I am leaning towards a dark brown wood with either a cream top or white with some colors in it. What about shower walls and floor to fit into that color scheme? Staying with white sink, toilet and trim work.

Want " modern' ? Stay away from walnut and woody vanities. Go white! Want color in the shower? Plain ceramic subway in a glossy drop color. ! Grout to match! A deep charcoal. A navy?! Both could look great!

Or put the "colors" on the walls . The floor wins and either work with it or get RID of it

I would do a sleek contemporary cabinet...(Zero risk, there....)

I would do a dark paint color (because that's what I am doing in my own master bath)

Navy blue---dark green---whatever your favorite color is...(again...don't be scared!!)

I disagree completely. Wood vanities can look quite modern too. Can we say MCM as just one example? The one shown upthread was also modern but in a wood.

In reality, I find wood even more contemporary than the idea of everything white. Personally I'm so dang tired of all white. It to me will date a house even faster than using color and wood.

I definitely wouldn't use traditional wood vanities as they look traditional. As far as the shower I would look for amazing mosaics in a design, that will blend with the floor.

They are available today in all different designs, metallic, sometimes numerous colors that are stunning. Have you considered tiling all the walls? I have won "Five NKBA Awards for my Baths" and I always tile all the walls unless the bath is huge. Or at least tile or marble them to a chair rail height and cap them with a rounded moulding, perhaps 3" high total, which will give it a beautiful, classy finish and a Tuscan feel but could be modern as well. I can't see the lighting but based on what your comment was, you probably need more general light, LED in the room, waterproof light in tub/shower and task lighting over the sink or sinks.

As far as the vanity, I would like to see what you select for the shower/wall tile or other suggested suggestion, till I make a suggestion? Check out this link, they have a wonderful selection.

I need to replace the vanity, mirror and lighting. Looking at quartz counter tops. Also converting the tub into a walk in shower. So I need shower flooring, wall tiles and accent piece as well. Toilet is in a little alcove. I was thinking about putting a stone wall behind it. Would also like to paint the walls. It is all white now! (cabinet, counter top, shower wall tile) My entire house is warm tones: creams, browns, golds, reds, oranges; however, I am open to change and have recently thrown in some blue/gray accents. My house is mostly monotone with the exception of pops of color in accessories!

Blue looks wonderful with so many of the colors you have...

Considering toilet alcove with striking tile, or plain? I'd keep in mind - not too many different materials, and place them carefully. You and I know that a toilet is a 'hard item' and might not benefit from more hard: tile... but can't tell. Good 'luck' !
