Ken, in this close-up I think you can see the "variegation" which is similar to what one associates with "tie-dye"?

Oh, I love that one, too. Unfortunately clematis almost never grows well for me. It has a long history of “failure to thrive” and I have never been able to figure out why?

This makes me regret when I passed up tie dye 1/2 off two years ago. Such a nice plant!

Cercis47, try growing a one of the summer blooming clematis like Tie Dye or Jackmanii. They tend to be far easier and more robust than the spring blooming plants that are common in the nurseries in spring. Plant a few inches deeper than in the pot, and they like sun, evenly moist roots (so give them mulch and don’t let them dry out), and give them a spring dose of rose food. The summer blooming plants have easy pruning, just chop them off leaving 3 or so buds per stem in late winter or early spring just before the leaves start expanding. If you miss a year pruning, it isn’t crucial, just makes for better blooming if pruned as recommended. They really are rewarding plants to grow.
