Barn door for abnormal door size/opening

My husband and I want to place a glass barn door in our condo. It would separate our bedroom from the master bath. The issue we're having is that our door opening is 102" H x 40" W. The condo is a new construction but the opening isn't framed or anything; it's just an opening between the master bed and master bath.

Anyway, how should we go about finding a door tall and wide enough to cover the opening? We want a frosted glass door like this:

When do you plan to actually close the bathroom door?

It's pretty noisy when it closes and not as simple as shutting a regular door softly :-)

It's very easy to get a door to fit even an unframed door and it would be far more functional for a bathroom door.

    Hi Helen,

We plan to close the door every morning. Our master bedroom is pretty small (1500 sq. ft. condo) and when one of us wakes up early, we actually get dressed in the dark so as not to wake the other. We're not concerned about privacy/noise at all - the door is just to block the light from the bathroom. We like the glass barn door option because it fits with our modern design, plus it won't make the bedroom feel any smaller.

A glass barn door won’t do a great job of blocking light. It will be just more “glowing” than “glaring” if you go with a frosted option (and with light possibly still sneaking out between door and wall).

I would not want a bathroom without a door, just not sure your pick is best option on your circumstances. I get up a lot earlier than my husband in morning to go to gym etc and just use another bathroom down hall to get dressed in. But in your case you may just want to frame the door out and put on a real solid door.

Not sure why the barn door would be more visually open than a regular door.

I'm having all my interior doors changed in my remodel to doors with mostly lami glass. It's completely opaque even when lit from within - I tested it by having the guy at the door store stand behind it in their bathroom - they had installed in a public bathroom which shows how opaque it is.

I doubt it lets any light out in terms of glare but it gives a much airier quality than a full wood door would and it has the advantage of closing like a regular door instead of a barn door.

You can buy the door in a contemporary style - you might check out Trustile doors as they have a lot of examples of contemporary doors. Any door that isn't slab can have the wood taken out and converted to glass - or lami glass in my case.

Invest in Lutron switches for all the lights in your bathroom and bedroom. Will give you great control dim lights are not so jarring

We did two narrower doors that meet in the middle. We used a framed glass so the wood would meet rather than the glass. We matched those doors to the closet doors. If I had it to do over, I would probably paint the glass on one side or the other. I love the look of the doors, but the light from the closet or bath when someone is trying to sleep is an issue.

Maybe you can do a pocket door.....this site let’s you design your own and use 1,2,3 or more doors.http://www.raydoor.com/explore-doors/pocket-doors/?gclid=CjwKCAjwg_fZBRAoEiwAppvp-Sm6P9BVyqa-1-DW1Es1AvDZ-p1tDGgmxxzsb8bb203Cn4NdduJUNRoCgEcQAvD_BwE

Whoa! That's an awesome site, thank you for the tip! I checked with our builder and the wall where we want to place the door isn't structural, so a pocket door would work. We didn't think it would, and that's why we opted for a barn door. The pocket door will save space too.

    Thanks again!

If you can find the hardware, ask any glass company to cut you a thick sheet of glass to size -- preferably one that is shatter resistant.

Hope it works out! Keep us posted on your decision and of course photos!

"ask any glass company to cut you a thick sheet of glass to size"

That needs to be tempered which is an ordered item with all the work to the glass before tempering. All the sliding doors I am aware do not allow you to use "laminated" glass, only tempered.
