Diatomaceous Earth works as an insecticide by cutting the exoskeleton of the pests as they walk/crawl over where it is spread. The common place to spread DE is on soil at the base of plants, not on the plant leaves. Since bees, and other pollinators, most often fly in I don't think they would be adversely affected by DE.

Insecticidal Soap does help control these wee buggers.

Kim thank you. I understand how it works and I guess I should have asked if DE will eradicate them? I have read that insecticidal soap is not very effective.

I have used it for soft bodied pests such as slugs and cutworms, but decided that for my particular pests, collars and traps worked and were easier. If you do decide to use DE, be aware that it will do the same damage to lung tissue as to insect bodies, so be sure to wear well fitted breathing and eye protection so that you don’t inhale it.
