Dining table too big

For years I have set up my dining room table, keeping one leaf in, making it 90” long. My dining room is not very big (12x12), but I liked the way the table looked at this size—pretty and elegant. The chairs at the head and foot of the table did not fit well because they have arms. One chair was very close to a wall, the other one came close to being in the next room. I ignored all this bc as I said, I liked the way the table looked at this size. Well now I am facing a dilemma as I ordered a rug for the room (8x10) which is really the best size for the room, but does not allow me to keep a leaf in the table. Wondering whether to keep the rug and use my table without any leaves, making it measure 70”. The table at 70” actually fits in the space better, but now doesn’t look quite as formal. The other option is to go back to where I was: no rug and a table a bit too large for the space but elegant. Advice?
