sun in GA is not the same in MN ... so it is imperative ... as noted above.. to know where you are ...

hosta are only shade tolerant ... and can actually be more vigorous in sun ... but they can end up looking rather ratty by the end of summer ...and even though they get ugly.. they end up bigger next year.. because of the increased photosynthesis ....

to avoid that ... the general rule .. is to avoid sun in the heat of the day .. hosta actually sweat ... transpire ... lose water ....so we dont want them.. on a daily basis.. running out of water.. during the heat of the day ... and so we try to avoid such ... with as much sun all the rest of the day ... if they do run low on water.. they get all crispy ... aka.. ugly ...

the most important ones to avoid hot sun ... are the plants with white tissue.. as that is the tissue that is least likely to tolerate such ...

all that said.. just plop it in the ground.. anywhere you want .. and if it gets ratty in late summer .. just move the darn thing for next year .. and if you feel it necessary.. discipline it with a few days on the driveway with little or no soil .. and then replant it ... it wont care .. and it will forever after know who exactly is in charge in your garden ...

ps: again .. depending where you are .... july and august may or may not be the best time to be planting.. depending on how much after care you can provide ... there would be no harm in holding the pot until sept .... and planting them ... but this is more of a volume thing.. both in terms of number of plants and size of garden ... the idea that you might lose track of some .. and not provide the requisite water needed ... you should be able to focus on one plant ...

Location, location, location. It all depends on where YOU are. Much different for GA and MN as Ken states above. My latitude here in CA is about equal to St. Louis, but we don't get the clouds that St. Louis gets. More sun here. Please let us know where you are located and put that in your screen name.

Thanks guys and so sorry for the missing info! I live in northern Europe (Helsinki, usda zone 4b) and I have around 70 different hostas growing here in my small garden. Most of my hostas tolerate sun really well but some of them tend to lose colours in sun - that’s actually the particular thing that I wanted to know about RE and wanted your opinion on :)

Oh, my, in Finland they could probably take full sun...except if you get any of those 24 hour long daylight days. Try it and see, you can always move it. It is a very special hosta a worth the effort.

Yup, I chose a rather sunny place for it, hope it’ll thrive. At the moment we have 18,5 h of daylight, already diminishing by 3 minutes/ day...

Welcome Laura! I hope you come back often. My RE gets sun until at least 2:00 - 2:30 and it is very happy. I hope Saija sees this post.

I am from Kauhajoki about 400 km north from Helsinki. I don't have experience of RE. I can plant hostas everywhere in my yard, it's quite shade, surrounded by forest. I feel they grow better in sun, one of my hosta beds is too shade and hostas grow slowly.
