There are some chrysalis (or would it be cocoons) now. At least I think that’s what it looks like.

I cut two of the chrysalis out as carefully as possible and put them in a cage. Took a picture of one shortly before it got to this stage.

I was really confused after reading that the main host plant is tree of heaven. After a bit of googling there were more reports of them being on Sumac. I double checked what is left of the little tree. I assumed it was a root sucker of the bigger Sumac, but wanted to be sure.

Yes, the Ailanthus Webworm Moth is instantly recognizable, I wasn't familiar with the caterpillar. Few people care about minor damage to ailanthus trees, perhaps your sumac is more valued.

I was expecting some small, hard to identify little brown moth, so I was surprised. I wasn’t worried about having a Sumac eaten, just worried of having the dreaded Tree of Haven popping up elsewhere. There is a single one growing out of an Azelea for years now. I cut it back as soon as I see it and it’s the only time I have ever applied roundup to a cut. It’s not giving up.
